Climate and Geography Westcoast Nations occupied a variety of geographic areas woodlands, grasslands, mountains, coastal areas, islands Other cultural areas of North America: Plateau, Plains,  Subarctic, Arctic, and Eastern Woodlands Climate temperate and moist The Japan Current warms ocean, moistens winds Rainfall = 100 inches a year  Oceans and rivers provided lots of fish Salmon very plentiful, could feed everyone Aboriginal nations large group called "North Pacific Culture" Extends 2000 miles from California to Alaska Chain of mountains runs along this area, called "Westcoast range" Agata

Culture Called "North Pacific Culture" or "Westcoast Culture" Potlatch Made up of small nations Spoke same language or dialect of it Characteristics passed from one group to next Potlatch gift-giving feast very important  Ocean, rivers and forests Provided food supply and game Food, building material & seaworthy boats Gave opportunity to affluent society Wild plants Support more food for a dense population potlatch seaworthy boat Tzu-Ai
