Question 5. Attending a live performance – for example, a play, concert, or sporting event, is more enjoyable than watching the same event on television. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

1.Troy Lund I think the enjoyment you get from attending an event live versus watching it on television depends on what the event is. I’m a big sports fan, I enjoy watching professional football games or hockey games live. If you’re not a person who enjoys crowds, you will probably enjoy the performance more if you watch it recorded.

2.Arroe Collins At home, you’re just a remote control away from turning things off.

3.Eric Medler It’s getting together with a group of people who have a common interest. I wholeheartedly believe that live performance is always better than television.

4.Bernie Beamon If you get a chance to see a live performance, it’s way better than seeing it on TV, ‘cause you remember all the people and the sounds and the lights – especially at a concert where they have all the special effects and stuff being right there is...uhm, better than seeing it on TV.

5.De Niro Attending a live performance is really the best thing in the world. I watch concerts on television all the time, and I love them! I listen to music on CDs, and it’s a wonderful experience. But nothing ever comes close to the feeling that I had in that concert hall. There’s something about being in the middle of a crowd. Well, you just feel the energy, and you’re into the game more, and it’s an amazing experience.

6. Morgan Barnhart I can still get the same feel and the same energy and the same vibe from watching it on television, plus I’m in the comfort of my own home, so that I kind of like a little bit better.

7. Shelby Lanier I think that attending a live performance has many things involved in it that you can’t get off of a televised performance, but at the same time, it really depends on your comfort level, and the price or the cost of going to that event.

8. Daniel G There is less noise and it’s more comfortable to watch an event on television versus being there live. There is a certain excitement in witnessing an event live – an energy you can feel by being there, that is heavily reduced and can’t feel as much of it as if you’re only watching it on television.

9.Danielle Fornes I’ve done a lot of both, but I think that seeing, for example, a concert live, nothing beats that. Just the ambience, the feel of the crowd, being surrounded by people who are cheering, the sound quality is more interesting just being in the venue at the moment.

COMPLETE ANSWERS

1.Troy Lund I think the enjoyment you get from attending an event live versus watching it on television depends on what the event is. I’m a big sports fan, I enjoy watching professional football games or hockey games live; other people might find those events less comfortable because of the number of people who are attending as well as something as simple as the climate or the temperature at football games; sometimes it’s raining or snowing, and there’s nothing you can do about that, so...I think the same goes for live performances or movies. If you’re not a person who enjoys crowds, you will probably enjoy the performance more if you watch it recorded. However, if you don’t mind having people within elbow distance, I think the live performance always gives you a, a clearer understanding and comprehension of what it is that you’re watching.

2.Arroe Collins You know what’s great about catching a live performance versus watching something on a Blu-Ray or a DVD? Being there. It’s the energy of everybody who is there that makes a concert an event. Be it the crowd screaming; the music bouncing off the walls; there’s an echo to the right; the bass guitars may be messing up a tad bit, and you catch it. But because you were there, it becomes an experience. At home, you’re just a remote control away from turning things off.

3.Eric Medler I absolutely believe attending a live performance of a play or a musician or a band or a football game or a baseball game is a lot more enjoyable than watching the same event on television. First off, you’re doing – it’s getting together with a group of people who have a common interest. You have a bunch of football fans all in the same place, rooting for the same team – so there’s a real camaraderie about that in that situation. You watch it on television... hah. I could fall asleep on the couch! So there’s not that human connection. And I think the same thing with any live performance, if I’m going to see a play or go to see a musician; being able to just connect with other people. I actually personally play guitar, and I go and I play in restaurants and nightclubs, and there’s something about having a live musician in front of me that I really enjoy. Something where you feel that connection – that human connection. So I wholeheartedly believe that live performance is always better than television.

4.Bernie Beamon If you get a chance to see a live performance, it’s way better than seeing it on TV, ‘cause you remember all the people and the sounds and the lights – especially at a concert where they have all the special effects and stuff being right there is...uhm, better than seeing it on TV.

5.De Niro Well, this is a pretty easy question for me to answer. Attending a live performance is really the best thing in the world. I remember a concert that I attended once – it was a singer with a big band – and it was the most amazing experience of my life! I sat in that audience, and I felt as if the music was inside me. It was the most exciting thing in the world! Now, I watch concerts on television all the time, and I love them! I listen to music on CDs, and it’s a wonderful experience. But nothing ever comes close to the feeling that I had in that concert hall that day. And it’s the same thing with a sporting event. If you had watched a hockey game on TV, it’s exciting! Absolutely. But if you’re in a stadium watching a ball game or you get a chance to watch a hockey game live, there’s something about being in the middle of a crowd. Well, you just feel the energy, and you’re into the game more, and it’s an amazing experience. So I, I really think that – although practically speaking, you can’t go to live performances all the time – they really are the most enjoyable.

6. Morgan Barnhart Attending a live performance is more enjoyable than watching the same event on television. I disagree with that. I’ve been to a concert and a play, you know, I’ve seen live events and, honestly they’re fun, but I can still get the same feel and the same energy and the same vibe from watching it on television, plus I’m in the comfort of my own home, so that I kind of like a little bit better.

7. Shelby Lanier I think that attending a live performance has many things involved in it that you can’t get off of a televised performance, but at the same time, it really depends on your comfort level, and the price or the cost of going to that event. In this day and age, things have gotten very expensive – you might pay 65 to 100 dollars a ticket to go to see a concert or a sporting event, and of course, if you’re gonna buy...you know, pay for parking and...you know, buy snacks and drinks and so forth, and souvenirs at the ball game, then you’re eventually gonna spend a lot more money than you would spend if you were at home watching it on television. Of course, there is that air of being there and being part of an event, especially if it’s an historical event and something monumental takes place. So I really think it depends on the person, and I think it depends on the experience that they’re out to have.

8. Daniel G Attending a live performance is so much more enjoyable than watching it on television. Well, some argue that there is less noise and it’s more comfortable to watch an event on television versus being there live. There is a certain excitement in witnessing an event live – an energy you can feel by being there, that is heavily reduced and can’t feel as much of it as if you’re only watching it on television. I know that at concerts I’ve attended, I feel more alive and connected with the performance than if I only watched it on television. You can be there; you can feel the crowd’s energy and excitement. You could see it in people’s eyes and hear it in their cheers and while you can also hear them on television, it’s nothing like being there in person. It makes you vibrate on the inside. Your heart beats faster, and it is just so much more fun and enjoyable to be there, whether it’s a concert or a sporting event or even a public speech. It’s just so much more exciting and invigorating to be there in person live versus on television.

9.Danielle Fornes Oh, I would definitely, definitely say attending a live performance is more enjoyable than watching it on TV, and I’ve done a lot of both, but I think that seeing, for example, a concert live, nothing beats that. Just the ambience, the feel of the crowd, being surrounded by people who are cheering, the sound quality is more interesting just being in the venue at the moment. The thrill of that is way more enjoyable than watching it on TV. Same thing with a sporting event – if you go to a hockey game, it’s not the same to watch someone being checked into the boards as it is sitting right there and hearing the sound and hearing the ice and hearing the crowd. I just really think seeing things live is way more enjoyable than watching it on TV.
