Migration in the Bible Christians use the Bible to support migration from one country to another There are many Bible passages where Biblical Characters migrate In the Old Testament, Abraham moved from Egypt on God’s command In the New Testament, Mary and Joseph migrated to Egypt after Jesus’ birth for safety The parable of the Good Samaritan shows Jesus clearly telling Christians to ‘love’ strangers and people who aren’t from their land by birth The Catholic Church celebrate ‘world migrants day’ annually in line with these beliefs

The Challenge of Christian Migration to the UK Christianity is the largest religion amongst migrants to the UK These immigrants belong to a variety of Christian denominations and see Church as being a constant in a new culture When large numbers of Christian immigrants start attending Churches in the UK, a number of problems are presented. Think, Pair, Share: Imagine a large influx of 6th form students joined Aquinas over the next year from Eastern Europe. What strategies would we have to put in place to help them settle in?

The Challenge of Christian Migration to the UK The three main challenges are: 1. Language barriers can make pastoral care difficult as well as teaching the gospels/catechism/sacraments 2. There are a significant difference in worship styles 3. Culture can be problematic when there are different cultural attitudes to Christianity and Christian worship 4. Assimilation between UK born Christians and Christian migrants can be difficult because of all of the issues above

The Reverse Mission Movement: Pentecostalism Pentecostal Churches are composed of many denominations and independent churches which focus on the experience of the worshipper and the miraculous gifts of the Spirit of God Pentecostal services tend to have healings, music, singing, dancing, clapping, spontaneous prayer and speaking in tongues

What can this global distribution map tell us about the spread of Protestant Christianity in the world?

The Reverse Mission Movement: Pentecostalism Interestingly, the rise of Pentecostalism in the southern hemisphere is keeping Christianity as one of the fasting growing religions globally Britain has many indigenous Pentecostal churches, but these have grown dramatically since migration to the UK, particularly from the commonwealth countries in the 60s. These Churches are often seen as a sign of ‘hope’ for Christians in the UK as they are preventing Christianity from declining in the public space Were any of the Churches that you researched before African or Caribbean Pentecostal churches?

Reverse Missionary Missionary = a person sent on a religious mission, especially one who spreads Christianity to a foreign The tradition of ‘missionary’ (spreading the world of Jesus across the globe) is well trodden in the Bible and early Church In the past, British Christian Churches sent missionaries out to the colonised countries and encouraged people to convert to Christianity Ironically, as indigenous Brits have now become more secular and less Christian, in recent times, many countries from the southern hemisphere have seen an opportunity to do missionary in the UK to try and encourage people to be baptized in the Christian faith This is known as ‘reverse mission’ Watch three reverse missionaries attempt to bring Britain ‘back’ to Christianity TASK: Watch this video and make notes of the key point of reverse mission Use your EDUQAS textbook page 42/3 to add to your notes

Does the UK need reverse mission and Pentecostalism to remain Christian YES There is a decline in census statistics for British people who ‘believe in God’ There are 20 closures of Church of England Churches a year. Most of the new Churches are Pentecostal Far fewer young people are attending weekly services NO Whilst young people may not be attending Church, surveys suggest that they still pray and identify as ‘Christian’ Evangelism in the Church of England is a growing trend
