Merry Go Round of Math Apps Presented by: Dana McGee Southwest Regional AT Facilitator

Overview: Make math more meaningful for your students by having them use a variety of math apps to demonstrate their understanding of the content being taught in your classroom. These apps will provide ways for you to differentiate learning for your students.

Schoolkit Math Schoolkit Math is a toolkit that gives you QUICK and EASY access to manipulatives that students commonly use in the classroom. Free The app contains: 1. Number Line 2. Hundreds Chart 3. Ten Frame 4. Arrays 5. Money 6. Math Challenge 7. Fraction Kit 8. Number Houses 9. Tether Math 10. Number Tiles 11. Multiplication Table 12. Dot Grid 13. Bar Graph 14. Shapes 15. Algebra Tiles 16. Ruler  17. Clock 18. Counters 19. Times Place 20. Line Graph 21. Comparisons 22. Multiply Fractions 23. Multiplication/Division Groups 24. Fact Families The app provides students many ways to express themselves visually. The variety of tools will help them discover the strategies they are most comfortable using. Use the Thinking Journal to help students go step-by-step through their thought process when solving a math problem. You can create a PDF document with screenshots, photos taken from the camera and typed or dictated text. Then, email or print the finished product.  Schoolkit Math also has a Math Challenge that quizzes students on math facts. The app has NO IN-APP PURCHASES or outside advertising. Schoolkit Math is a useful and convenient tool to help students express abstract math concepts visually.

Tangible Math Tangible Math is a virtual magnetic whiteboard with dozens of manipulatives. Perfect for the representational stage of showing math understanding. $4.99 Perfect for your students who are past the concrete stage, but not quite ready for the abstract. Tangible Math is a virtual magnetic whiteboard where you can set up lessons and teach math in a personal way. Before you are dozens of pieces to interact with. Numbers snap together to form larger values, mathlink cubes break apart into smaller sets, and familiar objects make counting fun. Activity boards provide a focus to a lesson with math sentences to complete, areas to group similar objects, charts to fill in, and clocks with realistic hand movement. Draw in color on any board to highlight and annotate the exercise. Your student will thrive as you work together to explore our world through math with Tangible Math!

Virtual Manipulatives Virtual Manipulatives is a whiteboard that allows students to choose fractions, decimals, or percents to model math thinking. Free Saves to the camera roll. I have provided a virtual set of fraction bars on www.abcya.com for several years. Many teachers have contacted me about creating a similar application for the iPad. Here it is! I offer this app for free because virtual manipulatives alone do not provide meaning for learners; they require a teacher to guide meaning and connections.

Classkick Classkick is an app that students work on and get help instantly from their teacher and peers. Teachers can create assignments easily and have students work on them digitally. Free Students work on assignments with their iPads, while getting help from teachers and peers instantly. Teachers create assignments, see all their students’ work in real-time, and give LOTS of student feedback. Best of all, students can help each other anonymously.

Draw and Tell Draw and Tell is a creative tool for children of all ages that allows them to explain their math thinking. Free

Chatterpix kids Chatterpix Kids can make anything talk. You can even use it for Math. Simply take a photo of you or a math problem, draw a line to make a mouth, and record your voice. Then save it to the camera roll to share with the teacher.

geoboard The Geoboard app is a tool for exploring a variety of mathematical topics introduced in the elementary and middle grades. Learners stretch bands around the pegs to form line segments and polygons and make discoveries about perimeter, area, angles, congruence, fractions, and more. Free Check out the many iPad apps that are available. These apps are based on visual models. All apps are available in two or more versions: a web app for all modern browsers, and downloadable versions for specific operating systems and devices (such as Apple iOS for iPad).

Math Vocabulary cards Math Vocabulary Cards help students deepen their conceptual understanding of key terms in mathematics. Each card features three sections: a math term, a representative example or model, and a concise definition. Free Check out the many iPad apps that are available. These apps are based on visual models. All apps are available in two or more versions: a web app for all modern browsers, and downloadable versions for specific operating systems and devices (such as Apple iOS for iPad).

Money pieces Money Pieces help students visualize and understand money values and relationships. Two versions of coins and bills are provided: virtual currency pieces that replicate the appearance and relative size of U.S. coins and the dollar bill, and area money pieces. Free Check out the many iPad apps that are available. These apps are based on visual models. All apps are available in two or more versions: a web app for all modern browsers, and downloadable versions for specific operating systems and devices (such as Apple iOS for iPad).

Number frames Number Frames help students structure numbers to 5, 10, 20, and 100. Students use the frames to count, represent, compare, and compute with numbers in a particular range. Free Check out the many iPad apps that are available. These apps are based on visual models. All apps are available in two or more versions: a web app for all modern browsers, and downloadable versions for specific operating systems and devices (such as Apple iOS for iPad).

Number line Number Line helps students visualize number sequences and illustrate strategies for counting, comparing, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Choose number lines labelled with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, or negative numbers. Free Check out the many iPad apps that are available. These apps are based on visual models. All apps are available in two or more versions: a web app for all modern browsers, and downloadable versions for specific operating systems and devices (such as Apple iOS for iPad).

Number pieces Number Pieces helps students develop a deeper understanding of place value while building their computation skills with multi-digit numbers. Students use the pieces to represent multi-digit numbers, regroup, add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Free Check out the many iPad apps that are available. These apps are based on visual models. All apps are available in two or more versions: a web app for all modern browsers, and downloadable versions for specific operating systems and devices (such as Apple iOS for iPad).

Number pieces basic Number Pieces Basic is a simplified version of Number Pieces. It has fewer features, putting greater focus on place value, counting, addition, and subtraction with multi-digit numbers. Free Check out the many iPad apps that are available. These apps are based on visual models. All apps are available in two or more versions: a web app for all modern browsers, and downloadable versions for specific operating systems and devices (such as Apple iOS for iPad).

Number rack Number Rack facilitates the natural development of children’s number sense. Rows of movable, colored beads encourage learners to think in groups of fives and tens, helping them to explore and discover a variety of addition and subtraction strategies. Free Check out the many iPad apps that are available. These apps are based on visual models. All apps are available in two or more versions: a web app for all modern browsers, and downloadable versions for specific operating systems and devices (such as Apple iOS for iPad).

Pattern shapes Students use Pattern Shapes to explore geometry and fractions, create their own designs, or filling in outlines. As they work with shapes, students think about angles, investigate symmetry, and compose and decompose larger shapes. Free Check out the many iPad apps that are available. These apps are based on visual models. All apps are available in two or more versions: a web app for all modern browsers, and downloadable versions for specific operating systems and devices (such as Apple iOS for iPad).
