Why do organisms need energy? The cells of all organisms need chemical energy in order to do work to survive. Why do organisms need energy? (Essential Question)

Does food give you energy? YES: Carbon based macromolecules (carbohydrates, lipids) found in food molecules store energy in their BONDS. Does food give you energy? BUT this energy is ONLY useable AFTER these molecules are BROKEN DOWN.

How can I get energy from these ‘bonds’? Break them!

The Main Energy Molecule In living things is ATP! ATP: Adenosine TriPhosphate: The principal compound used to store and release energy.

What do we consume every day that stores and releases energy? Food ADP ATP Food 2. Energy! 1. 3. “Fully charged battery” “Re-charge battery”

How Energy is Released from ATP The Structure of ATP Adenine (A) Ribose (sugar) 3 phosphates (Tri Phosphate or TP) Energy is stored between the phosphate bonds. When a phosphate is broken off of ATP, energy is released and becomes ADP. This is Chemical (Kinetic) energy that can be used to do work. How Energy is Released from ATP

How is energy stored in ATP? Energy is stored in the new phosphate bond becoming ATP again. This potential energy that is stored. (Like when you recharge your cell phone battery)

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING Energy in your body ATP Very quick energy, has a short shelf life. “Quick Energy” Carbohydrates (Glucose / C6H1206) Still has to be broken down to ATP “Long-Term Storage” Lipids Can stay in the body for a long time

Model the ATP/ADP Cycle Follow the directions on your handout: Label the pentagon’s Ribose - color GREEN Label the pentagon/hexagon Adenine - color BLUE Label the circles Phosphate - color RED Using your notes, build an ATP molecule and ADP molecule. Glue the extra phosphate to the center of the page. Add arrows showing the phosphate going from ADP to ATP. Label the arrow Energy Storage. Add arrows showing the phosphate moving from ATP to ADP. Label the Arrow Energy Release.
