ANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS SITUATION ?

(giving up something to get something “better”) Jan 07 / 08 Act D 53 Home Energy Use LEARNING TARGET: I can compare features of two homes and justify with evidence which home is more energy efficient. CH Q What does it take to reduce energy use in a home? VOCAB: trade-offs compromise (giving up something to get something “better”)

DISCUSSION What are some examples of energy?

What is E = mc2 E = mc2 What energy is: What energy is not: Energy makes change Energy is NOT something you can hold or touch (mass) Energy moves things Energy can transform into another energy E = mc2

An equation derived by the twentieth-century physicist Albert Einstein, in which E represents units of energy, m represents units of mass, and c2 is the speed of light squared, or multiplied by itself E=mc2 explains nuclear fusion, how matter can be destroyed and converted to energy and energy can be converted back to mass. It explains the atomic energy produced by nuclear power plants and the atomic energy released by atomic bombs. Neither would be possible without Einstein's equation.

The ability to do work or produce heat DISCUSSION (cont) Define Energy: The ability to do work or produce heat What features in your home involve energy? WS 53.1 Prior to Act.

PROCEDURE AND DATA MATERIALS: PROCEDURE: Read on pg. D 5-6 and summarize DATA: Notes in Journal WS 53.1 Anticipation Guide: Ideas about Energy

The amount of energy people use in their homes depends on the location or features of the home. Energy in general: In 2017, about 39% of total U.S. energy consumption was consumed by the residential and commercial sectors.  (in 2015 this was 22%). The other major energy uses in the US are for transportation, manufacturing, and business.

POST DISCUSSION What are the trade-offs involved in using single-pane instead of double-pane windows? although at first cheaper to buy, you do not save as much money in energy savings over time Single vs Double Paned Why??

ANALYSIS - Discuss and answer Q 3 & 4 on pg. D 7 ANS CHALLENGE Q What does it take to reduce energy use in a home? A: Efficient heating + cooling, appliances (including lights) - having lots of insulation and avoid leaks – color choice of house (light in hot, dark in cold areas) and shrubbery HOMEWORK None

Energy transfer; energy transformation; Dec 09 / 10 Act D 54 Evaluating Materials LEARNING TARGET: I can design and conduct an investigation to explore the relationship between potential and kinetic energy. CHALLENGE Q How does the height and mass of a object affect its gravitational potential energy? VOCAB: Energy transfer; energy transformation; Kinetic energy; potential energy; Gravitational potential energy Definitions come thru the discussion, not before…. discovery
