CUT A DEAL

(Exodus 24:6-8) And Moses took half the blood and put it in basins, and half the blood he sprinkled on the altar. 7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the Lord has said we will do, and be obedient.” 8 And Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, and said, “This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you according to all these words.”

When a covenant was sealed with blood, there was a ceremony that often accompanied the event. This is mentioned twice in the Old Testament. 1) God and Abram 2) Zedekiah and the people of Jerusalem

1) God and Abram (Genesis 15) “I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward” Eliezer of Damascus Count the stars “Lord God, how shall I know that I will inherit it?”

(Genesis 15:9-10) So He said to him, “Bring Me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” 10 Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, down the middle, and placed each piece opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds in two.

(Genesis 15:11) And when the vultures came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

In this tradition, to ratify the covenant both parties would then walk between the remains of the dead animals. The meaning was this: If one did not hold up their end of the deal, let them be treated as this dead animal. Origin of the idiom “Let’s cut a deal!”

(Genesis 15:17) And it came to pass, when the sun went down and it was dark, that behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a burning torch that passed between those pieces.

(Genesis 15:18) On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying: “To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates

Notice that only God passed through the animals – Abram did not Notice that only God passed through the animals – Abram did not. This was not a covenant between equals. God, as the superior, took complete responsibility for the terms of the covenant. He made the covenant with Abram!

The Hebrew word for covenant is “beriyth” [#1285 Strong’s, derivative of #1254]. It literally means “to cut”.

2) Zedekiah and the people of Jerusalem Covenant was made to release all Hebrew slaves after 6 years, in accordance to the Law Went back on their word

(Jeremiah 34:17-20) “Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘You have not obeyed Me in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother and every one to his neighbor. Behold, I proclaim liberty to you,’ says the Lord—‘to the sword, to pestilence, and to famine! And I will deliver you to trouble among all the kingdoms of the earth. and into the hand of those who seek their life.

(Jeremiah 34:17-20) And I will give the men who have transgressed My covenant, who have not performed the words of the covenant which they made before Me, when they cut the calf in two and passed between the parts of it— 19 the princes of Judah, the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, the priests, and all the people of the land who passed between the parts of the calf— 20 I will give them into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their life.

A blood covenant is a serious matter A blood covenant is a serious matter! (Hebrews 13:20) Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant…

A blood covenant is a serious matter A blood covenant is a serious matter! (1 Corinthians 11:25) In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” We are under a blood covenant today!!!
