English Language Arts (ELA) The time during the school day where students learn how to read and write Students’ native languages can be used to support instruction.

English Language Arts (ELA) EXAMPLES Reading a book and understanding it Writing a report about plants Learning how to spell

English Language Development (ELD) The time during the school day where students learn how to understand and speak English Includes reading and writing, but the goal is to learn language Students’ native languages not used frequently. Students learn academic language.

English Language Development (ELD) EXAMPLES Learning how to use the past tense (I went to the store) Learning different names of vehicles Learning when to use words (“Hey!” vs. “Hello, sir.”)
