Reception Parent’s Maths Information Workshop Parents and Carers Please feel free to write any questions or notes on the post its. We are happy to answer any queries. We will be explaining our approach to: Number Shape, space and measure

Development Matters https://www.foundationyears.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Development-Matters-FINAL-PRINT-AMENDED.pdf Development in the prime areas is vital to children making progress in the specific areas.

Daily routines (number of the day, calendar, number songs , giving dojos etc) Continuous provision (activities provided, linked to interest, adult questioning, enhancements etc) Adult led sessions (grouped by need, progressive teaching, recorded in maths books) Links during other teaching inputs (counting words, manipulating fingers, comparing)

Counting One more, one less Rote counting (counting forwards and then backwards) Counting objects (1:1 correspondence) Counting out objects Counting anything (jumps, claps etc) Counting objects that cannot be moved (pointing, in an order, crossing out ) One more, one less Understanding of the language Adding or taking away one practically Counting on or back (using a number line or mentally) Knowing the number that comes before or after

Representing numbers in different ways

Number recognition Knowing what each number looks like (start with numbers that are relevant to them) Recognise numbers (out of sequence, e.g flashcards, in the environment) and then order 1-5 5-10 Teen numbers 11-15 (trickiest numbers to learn) Order 1-20 by the end of Reception Begin to understand place value Writing / recording numbers (with marks and then numerals) There isn’t an expectation to be able to write numerals in Development Matters, however children want to record with numerals and it is vital that they have some ability to do this to aid their transition into Year One. Therefore we have number of the day, encourage children to copy numbers form a number line (once they have the recognition), model number formation and will teach number formation as part of handwriting sessions.

Manipulating Numbers (adding, subtracting, doubling, halving, sharing) Practically using a range of equipment (objects, numicon, part whole model, ten frame, number line etc) 10 8 2

Links to speaking and understanding (positional language, using ‘everyday’ language’ etc) Continuous provision (activities provided, adult questioning, enhancements etc) Adult led sessions (grouped by need, progressive teaching, recorded in maths books) Links during other teaching inputs (comparing, using specific vocabulary)

Shapes Use mathematical language 2D shapes 3D shapes Explore characteristics of shapes Recognise and describe patterns
