Imaging Techniques

X-Ray Use electromagnetic radiation Absorbed by dense tissues bone/ cartilage NOT blood

Mammogram X-ray of breast One breast at a time pressed firmly between two plates X ray taken-one from above and one from the side

CT Scan Aka CAT scan (computerized (axial) tomography) take x-rays from several views put together to make 3-D image half hour

Ultrasound aka ultrasonography, sonography, sonogram machine gives off high frequency sound waves that go through body sound waves creates echoes, machine converts echoes into real time images

Ultrasound Pictures of soft tissues that don’t show up on x-ray differentiates between fluid filled cyst and solid tumors due to differences in echo patterns used to guide needle biopsy

Ultrasound Not as detailed as MRI or CT Scan.
