How do lifestyle choices affect blood flow in the body? Blood Flow SC.912.L.14.36 Describe the factors affecting blood flow through the cardiovascular system How do lifestyle choices affect blood flow in the body?

Cardiovascular System Blood full of oxygen flow from the heart through: Arteries of decreasing size Capillaries deliver oxygen to cells Veins return oxygen-poor blood to the heart and lungs. Blood brings vital supplies, oxygen and nutrients, to the cells and carries away their wastes.

Pathways of Blood Flow Pulmonary Circulation: occurs between the heart and lungs; carries oxygen-poor blood to the lungs, where it picks up O2 and eliminates CO2 and water; carries oxygen-rich blood back to the heart Systemic Circulation: occurs between the heart and rest of the body; carries oxygen-rich blood to the cells

Factors That Affect Blood Flow: Blood Pressure Blood Pressure – the heart ventricle contracts and creates a force, or blood pressure on the arteries. The greater the force = faster the flow Blood receives oxygen from the lungs and delivers it to other organs Heart pumps blood around the body BP- caused by circulating blood flow on walls of veins and arteries

Factors That Affect Blood Flow: Blood Pressure Factors that can affect blood pressure Elasticity and blockage Less elastic and more blockage = reduce blood flow = harder the heart beat = blood pressure rises Normal elasticity and no blockage = normal blood flow, heart beat and pressure Exercise, stress and strong emotions Cause a natural increase but drops when at rest.

Blood Pressure Conditions Hypertension – high blood pressure = overworks the heart and puts stress on the blood vessels. Low blood pressure – your cells do not get enough oxygen and other necessary supplies.

Factors That Affect Blood Flow: Size of Blood Vessels diameter of blood vessels the larger the vessel, the faster the flow (think about drinking out of a straw vs. a water hose!) blood vessels constrict or reduce diameter during smoking

BLOOD VOLUME AFFECTS Excessive salt intake can lead to a high concentration of sodium and chloride within the bloodstream, reducing the water in the blood. Which property of water is at play?

Factors That Affect Blood Flow: Viscosity Blood Viscosity = thickness of blood Thin blood flows faster than thick blood Think of pouring syrup vs. soda The thicker or more viscous the blood the harder the heart will have to work/pump = increased blood pressure Eating a lot of junk food (high in cholesterol) would increase viscosity and decrease blood flow, as cholesterol will be deposited into the blood. What would be the effect of eating a lot of junk food?

Factors That Affect Blood Flow: Resistance Resistance by narrow or blocked blood vessels = decrease blood flow Narrow or smaller vessels Blood vessels constrict or reduce diameter Blocked blood vessels Blocked by plaque build up on the walls Plaque – deposits of cholesterol, calcium and fat Narrow or blocked blood vessels causes circulated blood volume per minute decreases

Viscosity and Resistance Viscosity: the property used to describe how thick a liquid is Resistance: an opposing force

Factors That Affect Blood Flow: Disease Atherosclerosis Blood flood is partially or fully blocked by plaque build up on the walls of arteries Associated with high blood pressure Arteriosclerosis Blood becomes thick and inflexible Causes blood pressure to increase

Cardiovascular Health Good for the Heart Bad for the Heart Healthy diet Variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains Moderate amounts of other carbohydrates and proteins Regular exercise No smoking Maintaining a healthy weight Avoid stress Diets high in fats, cholesterol and salt No exercise Smoking Overweight Too much stress

Exercise Increases blood pressure Increases blood flow More blood to muscles and less to stomach Same blood to brain Heart beats faster and harder to get more oxygen to cells

Ha! A red blood cell walked into a busy restaurant. The hostess asked, “Would you like sit at a table?” The red cell replied, “No thanks, I’ll just circulate.”

Stations C- level 2 voice (group should hear you and no one else) There are 5 stations in the back of the room testing the affects of the cardiovascular system. You will have 6 min at each station. C- level 2 voice (group should hear you and no one else) H- ask three before me (then raise your hand) A- complete the activity at your station and then rotate when the timer rings M- during work time, remain at your station, only move once the timer has gone off. You will have 15 seconds between stations. P- work with your group to complete each station and fill out your data sheet SUCCESS

Exit ticket time! Put everything away and clear your desk
