PRODUCTIVE TEACHING AIDS

To discuss the “Productive Teaching Aids” Objectives: To discuss the “Productive Teaching Aids” To present the advantages and disadvantages of every Productive Teaching Aids

Blackboard, whiteboard, Flipchart A fix or movable surface on which to write notes, either prepared before teaching serious created during the session.

Blackboard, whiteboard,Flipchart Advantages Disadvantages Flipchart allows some flexibility Flipchart can be taken away by students It requires pen or chalk

Data, slide and overhead projector A data projector uses a computer or laptop A slide projector uses a carousel of physical slides Overhead projector uses clear acetate sheets on which the images have been written by hand or printed

Data, slide and overhead projector Advantages Disadvantages Data projector allows you to show slick, professional set of slides Slide projector allows you to show slides without hassle Overhead projector is easy to use and unlikely to go wrong can fail to work, students can become bored Can goes wrong, there’s no back-up Check the equipment before you start

Interactive whiteboard (smartboard) A fix electronic whiteboard that allows you project images on to the screen but also write on it using electronic pens

Interactive whiteboard (smartboard) Advantages Disadvantages It allows you to prepare a normal slide presentations The material can be saved and sent to the students or lodged within a virtual learning environment (VLE) It takes a little time to set up, which is nerve-wracking if a group of students is staring at you in anticipation.

Handouts Are the guides that help students through learning situation. It allows students to look back on the teaching event

Handouts Advantages Disadvantages They are utterly reliable. They are also versatile. Can be circulated electronically after the event, either by email or virtual learning environment Students can become too reliant on them. Handouts replicates a learning event

Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), “Turnitin” A website or series interconnected websites on which lodged teaching material and via which lecturer and students may interact.

Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), “Turnitin” Advantages Disadvantages They can save you a vast amount of time To ensure that out-of-date material has been removed and the up-to-date material is fit for purpose in terms of your next year’s teaching. Students have to assume that everything on the site accurate and up to date and some find this makes them anxious

Wikis and online polling system A wiki is an online space with set protocols within which students can upload material so as to set up teaching and/or general support resources. An online polling system allows a group of people to respond to an event online using their mobile phones.

Wikis and online polling system Advantages Disadvantages Wikis allows students to take control of a learning situation to a large extent and they make group work easy to view and mark. Online polling system allow even shy students to speak up and kinaesthetic learners particular love them. Students tend not to trust fully what is in them until an academic has hooked over the site and checked it all. Brave academic

Demonstration Something in action is shown to students. To perform any kind of action in sport, dance or art work.

Demonstration Advantages Disadvantages Show exactly what you want to show at exactly at the right time. Demonstration is probably worth several thousand This is not necessarily a problem as long as you have a back-up plan.

Film and Audio Film clips or audio recordings (which you have made yourself or are already on CD or DVD) that you shows to or share with students using variety of means (as part of a slideshow, via a data projector, a virtual leaning environment or an online film clip site, for example)

Film and Audio Advantages Disadvantages Can enliven a teaching situation and keep your students alert. Save you time in that one film or audio clip can demonstrate a point well without the need for lengthy explanation They can take an unexpectedly long time to set up and play.

Online Resources and Mobile phones Online resources are materials accessed via the internet and used either in a teaching situation or by students when they are learning. Mobile phones as one of us was recently surprised by technology during seminar.

Online Resources and Mobile phones Advantages Disadvantages Students are familiar with the Internet It can be accessed by them from anywhere in the world Students are familiar with the Internet and so segue on to social networking sites when they are supposed to be studying. It contains a vast amount of useful material…. And an awful lot of rubbish
