The Periodic Table Essential Questions: What is the periodic Table? What information can we get from it? How do we read the periodic table?

Periodic Table of the Elements

Elements of the Periodic Table Transition metals-good conductors of electricity; shiny; less reactive than alkali metals or alkaline earth metals Noble gases-don’t combine chemically with any other atoms, not even themselves. Totally chemically nonreactive Halogens-most reactive of the non-metals; will react with most metals

Metalloids(semi-metals)- Brittle solids with some properties of both metals and non-metals. Alkali Metals- Silvery and soft enough to cut with a knife. Extremely reactive with non-metals; never found in nature alone. These are the most reactive of all the metals. Alkaline Earth Metals- harder, denser, stronger than alkali metals. Higher melting points, too. Less reactive than Alkali metals but too reactive to be found in nature alone, always combined. Non-metals- brittle, not shiny, not good conductors of electricity. Includes gases (vapors)
