Chapter 3 Study Guide

Who am I? I was founded in 1607 and was the first permanent English settlement in the New World. My colonists faced a starving time, bad water and disease in the first year. John Rolfe’s development of a high-grade tobacco saved me; it became the settlement’s first major export. Jamestown

How were the colonies of Jamestown and Plymouth alike? Both had a starving time Both had a charter Both were Puritan settlements

Which describes a pacifist? Opposed to war A Quaker Settled in Maryland

Which is TRUE about the Salem Witch Trials? The town was renamed after the trials. Nathaniel Bacon died and the trials ended. The villagers believed it was God’s way of punishment for those who avoided the New England Way.

Which of these ISN’T true about the colony of Georgia? It wasn’t one of the original 13 colonies. It was a colony started by James Oglethorpe for imprisoned English debtors. All religions were welcomed.

Roger Williams Who am I? I opposed forced church attendance. I was against the practice of taking Native American land by force. I was forced to leave the Massachusetts colony and started the colony of Rhode Island, where I spoke in favor of the separation of church and state. Roger Williams

Which statement is TRUE? The colonies were sponsored by joint-stock companies. A patroon was appointed by the king of England to rule a colony in the New World. The Jamestown colony was swampy; many colonists died of malaria. `
