Along for the journey: School Chaplaincy Nigel Roberts MCYM
St Martin Enourager Accompanier Paraklete A chaplain is not a secret undercover worker for the church whose role is to proselytise. This is just project fear from the national secular society. They are someone who, prompted by the love of God works alongside a school staff and students to bring about change. I think that they are ideally placed to support church schools as they seek to fullfil the vision for education bringing wisdom, hope, community and dignity.

Personal Development The personal and spiritual development of students and staff is something that a chaplain can contribute to in a unique way, by adopting an approach taken by Jesus.
Jesus saw potential: You are, you will be A pedagogy of hope Hope is part of the vision for education and when its in place it is transformational.
environment for growth He created an environment for growth - Community, fellowship, shared vision and ethos He created an environment for growth
He created opportunities for growth A community that is outward looking – the Scottish experience – a bridge The example of Barlastone school in the diocese He created opportunities for growth
He saw the value of children He practised embrace Jesus and the little children. Marislav Volf – embrace – welcome and stay. I am incomplete without you - discovering what each has to offer to build the community. An positive demonstration of our belief in the dignity of each individual within our schools.
A chaplain is a tender of orchards Jesus measured development in lots of ways – questions, tests of circumstance, but also by fruitfulness – love, gentleness, kindness, peace, self control. That is the fruit we can expect when we do spiritual and personal development well and would make schools just amazing places to be A chaplain is a tender of orchards
Along for the journey I am still linked to a national schools organisation called Youth for Christ and in my past we would visit schools for a day or a week and then go. Not so a chaplain. They are a committed, servant hearted member of your team. They are along for the long haul. Along for the journey.
