Presentation transcript:

Access to food FACT CARDS Poorer neighbourhoods have more fast food shops and fewer places to buy or grow fresh fruit and vegetables A good diet can protect the body against many diseases and health conditions, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers

FACT CARDS Access to transport Every week, 5 people in Bristol die prematurely because of an air-pollution related illness Walking and cycling routes increase our physical activity

Access to food THINK What food is available nearby? Is it healthy? Does what you eat make you feel well and happy, with energy to play?

Access to transport THINK Are there designated bike racks at school or ‘walk to school’ clubs? What would make your trips better for you and for people around you?

FACT CARDS FACT CARDS Neighbourhood design Houses that are built far apart from one another and away from shops and activities reduces our physical activity Our mental health can improve if we can see green space outside of our window

Access to nature FACT CARDS Only half of people in England live within 300 metres of green space and the amount of green space available is expected to decrease as urban infrastructure expands. A city park is about 1oC cooler than a non- green site in a city

Neighbourhood design THINK How easy is it to walk or cycle near your school? Are shops and play parks within walking distance? Does the area feel safe? That image is from Berlin – spaced out residential area. Lots of green space but looks like no shops, community centres, schools etc

Access to nature THINK How easy is it to access green space near your school? Are there places that promote wildlife nearby?

Building design FACT CARDS About 20% of UK homes are too cold in winter, too hot in summer and/or made with unsustainable materials If we are all able to heat our homes in the winter we could reduce excess winter deaths, long-term illness, and improve mental health

Building design What features of the school building might waste energy and add to carbon emissions? (for example building materials, windows and doors). What features help to conserve energy and protect our health?
