Walt Whitman Science Course Overview Don DeMember Science Resource Teacher, NBCT Donald_j_demember@mcpsmd.org
State Requirements 3 credits in science new for 2021 Graduation (current 10th graders) 3 NGSS Next Generation Science Standard Classes. Including, 1. Biology, 2. Chemistry, 3. Physics or an AP Science Course. MISA Test spring of their third science class.
Core Science Classes 9th Biology (honors or regular) 10th Chemistry (honors or regular) 11th Physics. (honors, regular, AP Physics 1) New course for regular physics in 2019. Advanced Placement Science – 6 course options. Many paths. Lots of flexibility! Recommended vs Required.
Honors vs On-Level Classes About 25%-30% more concepts. Cover material faster and deeper. More application and synthesis of concepts expected and tested. Math Content: Biology – more complicated graphs, Chem & Physics – lots of word problems. On-Level 70% to 80% of the same content as honors. Reading level and work level more manageable. Math applications more structured in some units.
