Emotions A complex psychological state Three distinct components A subjective experience A physiological response A behavioral or expressive response They are autonomous bodily responses to certain external or internal events

Emotional Intelligence The ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others. Emotional Awareness- the ability to harness emotions and apply them to tasks like thinking and problem solving The ability to manage emotions- regulating your own emotions and cheering up or calming down other people. Emotional Intelligence is the foundation for critical thinking EI requires effective communication between rational and emotional centers of the brain

Emotional Intelligence

Signs of emotional intelligence You Think About Feelings Self and social awareness- recognize emotions and impact on yourself and others Reflection: What are my emotional strengths, how does my current mood affect my thoughts and decision making? You Pause Simply taking a moment to stop and think before you act or speak. It helps you from making a permanent decision based on a temporary decision. It takes practice, it is in theory, difficult in practice.

Signs of emotional intelligence You strive to control your thoughts You don’t have much control over the emotion you experience in a given moment You can control your reaction to those-emotions--focusing on your thoughts (you can’t prevent a bird from landing on your head-but you can keep it from building a nest.) You Benefit and Accept Criticism You understand criticism is a chance to learn, even if not delivered in the best way. When you receive negative feedback- ask, how can this make me better.

Signs of emotional intelligence You Show Authenticity You say what you mean, meaning what you say, and sticking to your values and principles above all else. You Demonstrate Empathy You understand others’ thoughts and feelings, helps you connect with others. You Praise Others You commend others, you are able to focus on the good of others. You inspire them to be the best versions of themselves .

Signs of emotional intelligence You Give Helpful Feedback You Apologize Takes strength and courage to be able to say you’re sorry. Emotional intelligence helps you realize that apologizing doesn’t always mean you’re wrong. It means you value your relationships more than your ego You Forgive and Forget Allows you to prevent others from holding your emotions hostage and allowing you to move forward

Signs of emotional intelligence You Keep your Commitments Build a strong reputation for reliability and trustworthiness You Help Others You Protect Yourself from Emotional Sabotage
