EXTRACTING DNA FROM FRUIT Try extracting DNA from fruit with this hands on activity

WHAT IS THIS? Question: Does any one know what this is? DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid is a long molecule that encodes our genetic instructions. DNA has a distinctive double helix shape, like a twisted ladder. Two strands of DNA are twisted together into the double helix shape. The rungs on the DNA ladder are called base pairs.

THE DNA CODE G A C T C T G A DNA is made of four bases or DNA letters: A, C, G, T DNA bases always pair in the same way A always pairs with T C always pairs with G Because of this loyal pairing, if you know the letter on one side of the DNA you will always know what the other side will be. The sequence or order of the DNA letters provide instructions or code for the cell to make proteins. The building blocks of life.

WHERE IS DNA FOUND? DNA is found in all living things. Question: Where do you think DNA can be found in a human? Every part of the human body has DNA as DNA is found in most cells of the body.

WHERE IS DNA FOUND? animal cell nucleus DNA cytoplasm cell membrane This is an animal cell. You can see that the DNA is found inside the nucleus, the information centre of the cell. animal cell

WHAT LIVING THINGS HAVE DNA? Question: Can anyone name anything with DNA? All living things have DNA: animals, plants, fungi and bacteria. Question: Does anyone know any of these living things? European Robin – small song bird Himalayan Balsam – a plant native to the Himalayan mountains, now living along rivers in the UK Grey Squirrel – a tree-living rodent now found across most of the UK Brown Trout – a fish found in UK rivers Ringlet Butterfly – a butterfly found in the UK Blackberry – common berry found all around the UK Zouavman Le Zouave, Wikimedia Commons
