Political Developments in the Early Republic 11.6-11.8

George Washington’s Accomplishments Helped the government get up and running Added 3 new states to the nation Kentucky Vermont Tennessee United the states into one nation Successfully ended the Whiskey rebellion Established the governments authority over the people

Washington’s Accomplishments Continued 5. Built up the nations economy- With Hamilton’s help Got the nation’s debt under control Assumed (took over) all revolutionary war debt that the states had (mostly in the north)not paid off Established a national bank Collect tax money Printed money Make loans to grow business and industry (Elastic clause- allows government to do what is necessary)

John Adams (federalist) voted President Election of 1796 Electoral College John Adams (federalist) voted President Thomas Jefferson (Republican) voted Vice President While Adams and Jefferson worked together, Federalists in Congress passed laws to weaken the Republican party

Alien Acts 3 laws about non-citizens of the United States One of the laws increased the time it took to be a citizen from 5 years to 14 years Republicans viewed this as an attack, because most immigrants supported their party Two of the laws allowed the President to jail or deport aliens that were suspected of activities that threatened the government Targeted French agents in the United States, once again an attack on Republican supporters

Sedition Act: Made it a crime to speak or write critically about the government. Punished Republicans who wrote/ spoke about the Federalists who controlled the government This law violated the 1st Amendment

Republicans Response Republicans viewed ALL of these acts as an attack on their party They took action in State legislatures Pushed for nullification Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions- tried to nullify Alien and Sedition Acts Raised the questions of States’ Rights Can states rule a Federal Governments act an abuse of power?

Election of 1800 Candidates Issues Federalists: John Adams (Pres.) Charles Pinckney (VP) Republican: Thomas Jefferson (Pres.) Aaron Burr (VP) Issues Federalists: peace and prosperity Republicans: constitution and states’ rights It was an ugly campaign with a lot of name calling and mudslinging from both parties The Federalist party was divided because of Adam’s foreign policy, which allowed the Republicans to win

Deadlock and a New Amendment Electoral college had a tie vote for Jefferson and Burr Constitution say that the House of Representatives decides in a tie House votes 35 time and is deadlock in a tie Hamilton speaks out in favor of Jefferson “less dangerous” Jefferson wins the Presidency Viewed as peaceful revolution – the government changed hands without violence This election led to the 12th Amendment Electoral college cast 2 ballots one for President and one for VP
