Social Learning (Observational Learning) Module 17

Social/Observational Learning learning by observing & watching others model - person whose behavior the subject watches & imitates modeling - process of observing & imitating a specific behavior a cognitive process

Albert Bandura American psychologist studied observational learning; focus: the consequences a model has on subjects Bobo Doll experiments

Read “Albert Bandura and Observational Learning” (pgs 325 – 327) & complete your reading organizer What was the Bobo doll experiment? How did the children who watched the model behave? What three (different) consequences did the model receive after behaving aggressively? How did the three (different) consequences being delivered to the model impact the children’s behavior? Describe the impact for each of the three groups.

Bobo Doll Experiment

Bobo Doll Experiment children watched an adult model show aggressive behavior toward a Bobo doll three experimental conditions: model was praised model was punished model received no consequences

Vicarious Learning learning by seeing the consequence of another’s behavior

Modeling Requirements Bandura’s 4 requirements for modeling to occur: Attention: be aware of the behaviors of those around you Retention: remember the behavior you witnessed Ability to reproduce the behavior Motivation: more likely to learn if the model is rewarded for behavior & if we like the model

Social Learning & Violence in the Media

Role Models Notebook Entry Who are some positive role models in your life? What makes these people positive role models? List some people you do not consider to be positive role models. What makes these people negative role models? List the people that may look to you as a role model. What positive qualities do you have that make you a positive role model for others? What qualities would you like to improve upon to make yourself a better role model for others?

Antisocial & Prosocial Behavior Antisocial behavior - negative, destructive unhelpful behavior Prosocial behavior – positive, constructive, helpful behavior both types can be modeled
