Hydrosphere

One of the requirements of life is liquid water

Hydrosphere The hydrosphere includes all of the water on or near the Earth’s surface Includes: Oceans Lakes Rivers Wetlands Polar ice caps Soil Rock layers beneath the surface clouds

Water cycle The continuous movement of water into the air, onto land, and then back to water sources is known as the water cycle.

Water Cycle Evaporation is the process by which water is heated by the sun and then rises into the atmosphere as water vapor Condensation: water vapor forms water droplets on dust particles to form clouds Precipitation: the water droplets collide and form heavier droplets and fall from the sky as rain, snow, sleet or hail

Oceans 4 oceans = Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Arctic Cover about 70% of the Earth’s surface The salinity of ocean water is the concentration of all the dissolved salts it contains (how salty it is). Lower in places that get a lot of rain Higher in places where water evaporates rapidly

Oceans One of the most important functions of the ocean is to absorb and store energy from sunlight This helps regulate temperatures in the Earth’s atmosphere

Freshwater A little more than 3% of all water on Earth is fresh water Most of which is in icecaps and glaciers

Groundwater Groundwater fulfills the human need for fresh drinking water and supplies water for many agricultural and industrial uses 1% of all the water on Earth

Groundwater A rock layer that stores and allows the flow of groundwater is called an aquifer The surface of the land where water enters an aquifer is called a recharge zone

Biosphere

Biosphere The biosphere is the narrow layer around Earth’s surface in which life can exist Consists of: The uppermost part of the geosphere Most of the hydrosphere Lower part of the atmosphere Extends about 12 km into the ocean and about 9 km into the atmosphere

What makes life possible in the biosphere? Liquid water, moderate temperatures, and a source of energy (e.g. the sun)

Energy flow in the biosphere In a closed system, energy enters and leaves the system, but matter does not. Earth is a closed system because the only thing that enters is energy from the sun and the only thing that leaves is heat

Energy flow in the biosphere In an open system, both matter and energy are exchanged between a system and the surrounding environment.

Atmosphere

Contains the gases that organisms need, such as oxygen; keeps Earth warm enough to support life
