Separation of Powers: powers of the government are spread among 3 different branches of government

Legislative Branch: Make Laws

Executive Branch:Enforce Laws .

Judicial Branch: Interpret Laws to make sure they honor the Constitution

Checks and Balances: to make sure no part of government takes too much power!

The President nominates a Judge to the Supreme Court BUT The Senate has to approve her!

The President can OK a law sent to him by Congress OR the President can veto (REJECT!) the law.

The Court can declare acts of Congress or the President to be against the Constitution!

Federalism: some powers are for the states; some powers are for the national government

National power

State power: rules for marriage
