HEALTHY NUTRITION

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF NUTRITION? The process of providing or obtaining the food necessary for health and growth.

FOOD ITEMS Proteins Carbohydrates Fats Minerals Vitamins Water

PROTEINS Protein is a macronutrient that builds and maintains muscle and body tissue. Where Can We Get It? : eggs, milk, fish and sea foods, chicken, soya, nuts and seeds, beans.

CARBOHYDRATES They're a source of energy for the body. Sources of carbohydrate include whole grains, fruit, and vegetables. Carbohydrates are the sugars, starches and fibers found in fruits, grains, vegetables and milk products.

FATS The name — fat — may make it sound like something you should not eat. But fat is an important part of a healthy diet. People especially little kids, need a certain amount of fat in their diets so the brain and nervous system develop correctly. Some examples of foods that contain fats are butter, oil, nuts, meat, fish, and some dairy products.

MINERALS Just like vitamins, minerals help your body grow, develop, and stay healthy. Major minerals; small amounts of some minerals are also in foods — for instance, red meat, such as beef, is a good source of iron. Calsium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium.

CALCIUM Calcium is found in the largest amounts in dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt. CALCIUM SOURCES; But it's also found in nuts, green leafy vegetables and fortified foods such as breakfast cereal and nut milks.

IRON Iron is an essential mineral that is important for good health. Why is iron important? Iron has many important functions in your body.  • It carries oxygen to all parts of your body • It helps your cells work properly • It helps babies’ brains and nerves develop properly  Top 10 Iron-Rich Foods Dark chocolate, liver, spinach, sardines, black beans, pistachios, raisins, lentils, grass fed beef, spirulina.

VITAMINS Vitamins are substances that your body needs to grow and develop normally. Vitamin A Vitamin D Vitamin E Vitamin K Vitamin C Vitamin B

WATER Water is a nutrient all its own, helping every cell in your body function properly. Not drinking enough water appears to be associated with such problems as falls and fractures, heat stroke, heart disease, lung disorders, kidney disease, kidney stones, bladder and colon cancers, urinary tract infections, cavities, decreased immune function.

Diseases Caused By Nutritional Deficiencies Iron Deficiency Anaemia: Iron deficiency anaemia is a disease caused by the deficiency of iron in the body. OBESITY: Obesity is a condition where a person has accumulated so much body fat that it might have a negative effect on their health. Anorexia Nervosa: Anorexia Nervosa is a psychological and possibly life-threatening eating disorder defined by an extremely low body weight.

OBESITY

OBESITY Being overweight or obese puts you at risk for many serious health conditions, including diabetes, sleep apnea, and even cancer. "Obesity" means too much body fat. It's usually based on your body mass index (BMI), which you can check using a BMI calculator. BMI compares your weight to your height.
