Mood and Affective Disorders ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY What a beautiful day… I am so glad to be alive. I said… “shut up. I hate the sound of your voice” One minute to the next Mood and Affective Disorders

Those with mood disorders… Experience extreme or inappropriate emotion.

Seasonal Affective Disorder Feeling of depression during the winter months due to lack of sunlight. Also known as S.A.D. which is ironic! Affective means that the feeling of depression is “affected” by the environment or elements beyond the persons control.

Unipolar Mood Disorder Also know as “Major Depression” Unhappy for more than 2 weeks with no apparent cause. This type of depression is the “common cold” of psychological disorders.

Bipolar Mood Disorder Also known as “Manic Depression” Involves episodes of depression and mania (hence: manic) Manic episodes are high energy… can be overly happy or very irritated. SEVERE and UNUSUAL mood swings that differ greatly. http://www.learner.org/resources/series150.html?pop=yes&pid=1638#

Depression in any form can be serious and the consequences severe. If you or someone you care about needs help… don’t hesitate to ask or tell someone. It can spiral out of control quickly.

As a novice psychologist, how would you explain Mood Disorders? Why? Psychological School/Perspective Cause of the Disorder Psychoanalytic/Psychodynamic Internal, unconscious drives Humanistic Failure to strive to one’s potential or being out of touch with one’s feelings. Behavioral Reinforcement history, the environment. Cognitive Irrational, dysfunctional thoughts or ways of thinking. Sociocultural Dysfunctional Society Biomedical/Neuroscience Organic problems, biochemical imbalances, genetic predispositions.

SOMATOFORM DISORDERS Physical symptoms (or perception of them) manifest as psychological issues. Body and mind disorders= somatoform. NO rational, physical, or medical reason for the issue.

Somatoform disorders include: Pain disorder: person reports constant pain. False pregnancy: female is convinced that she is pregnant and starts to show some signs of pregnancy (morning sickness, wt gain, etc) Conversion disorder: suddenly unable to do something (talk, walk, see) with no physical, medical, explainable reason. Hypochondria: constant fear that one is sick without any rational reason. http://www.bing.com/videos/watch/video/hypochondria-can-be-a-serious-problem/6z06hc5
