Low-Cost and Zero-Cost Books Tagging

New Textbook Tagging system in PeopleSoft Low-Cost Books: The total cost of required texts and textbooks is less than $40 (this includes ancillaries, such as an “access code” but not supplies, like a graphing calculator or pencils). Zero-Cost Books: The total cost of required texts and textbooks is $0 (this includes ancillaries, such as an “access code” but not supplies, like a graphing calculator or pencils). Chairs, Deans, or Office Managers should tag courses as LCB or ZCB when staffing and submitting textbook orders.

Students can search for classes according to ”course attribute”

There is a drop-down menu for filtering search results

All class searches include a column identifying LCB / ZCB courses

Anyone can tag their courses as LCB or ZCB, as long as they fit the definition

The Z-Degree

What is the Z-Degree, again? A structured schedule of courses: All OER or zero-cost for textbooks In some cases, where OER ancillary resources are used, course fees are subsidized by HCC For specific degree plans AA, Business Administration (Central and Northline campuses) AA, Multidisciplinary Studies (Central campus) Core Curriculum (Central, Northline, Spring Branch, and Stafford campuses, 2018-19) Faculty are trained and receive and OER Certificate Not all OER courses are in the Z-Degree

OER Certificate Required courses: TL1000, “Student Engagement (Learning-Centered) Instructional Design” TL1011, “Writing Learning Outcomes and Course Objectives” TL1700, “Copyright Literacy in the Academic Environment” TL1800, “Discovering and Integrating Library Services” “Introduction to Open Educational Resources” Expect 4 sessions per semester Working on an online version for Spring 2019 “Z-Degree Faculty: Putting it all Together” Will be scheduled as needed, once per semester

What are OER? Open Educational Resources are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and re-purposing by others. (William and Flora Hewlett Foundation)

The 5 R’s of OER Importantly OER materials attempt to preserve these 5 capacities (Wiley 2014): Retain: the right to make, own , and control copies of the content. Reuse: the right to use the content in a wide range of ways. Revise: the right to adapt, adjust, modify, or alter the content itself. Remix: the right to combine the original or revised content with other open content to create something new. Redistribute: the right to share copies of the original content, your revisions, or your remixes with others.
