Flexible Essential Skills Project

What is the Flexible Essential Skills Project What is the Flexible Essential Skills Project? This project is funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and delivered in partnership between With the aim of increasing essential everyday skills to more adult learners in Wales

Everyday Skills courses There are a range of new FREE online courses available to anyone who wants to improve and refresh their everyday skills in Maths and English Everyday Skills courses

Everyday English 1 available from the end of Jan 2019 Everyday Maths 1 English version available from the end of Jan 2019 Everyday Maths 1 Welsh version available from March 2019 Everyday English 2 available from the end of March 2019 Everyday Maths 2 English version available from the end of Mar 2019 Everyday Maths 2 Welsh version available from June 2019

The Everyday Skills courses have been mapped against the Wales Essential Skills Framework and learners are able to: Study on their own and gain a “digital badge” And if desired Be supported through their college and gain an Essential Skills Qualification

FREE online courses will be available on www.open.edu/openlearncymru The online part of the course will take around 48 hours to complete

Everyday English 1: An introduction to basic English skills covering spelling, punctuation, grammar, reading for meaning and communication skills. Everyday English 2: A more advanced English skills course on report writing, writing emails and letters, information gathering, critical thinking and presentation skills. Everyday Maths 1: (Available in Welsh and English) An introduction to basic numeracy skills covering addition (+), subtraction (-), multiplication (x), division (÷), basic fractions ( 1 4 ) and percentages (%). The course also includes working with money, measurements and shapes, and basic data handling. Everyday Maths 2: (Available in Welsh and English) A more advanced maths skills course looking at percentage change and reverse percentages; how to convert values between fractions, decimals and percentages; how to calculate perimeters, areas and volumes; and currency conversions.

What are the courses like? Each Everyday Skills course focuses on problem solving and applies skills to real-life and workplace situations: Working with money Writing emails, letters and reports Communicating with people Working out percentages Solving problems Creating presentations Managing finances Gathering information Thinking critically

Courses are free and can be accessed 24/7 Each course is around 48 hours of study We recommend at least 5 hours per week Interactive quizzes and activities in each section Includes a final quiz with a pass mark of 60% which then leads to an Open University digital badge Learners can then link to their college for a formal Essential Skills assessment, and if desired be further supported through their college and gain an Essential Skills Qualification
