Health 9/18/18

The ABC’s of Good Health The ABC’s is an anagram for how you should try to be healthy. It stands for: A- Aim for fitness B- Build a healthy base C- Choose Sensibly

Aim for Fitness Being physically active every day and maintaining a healthy weight are important. You are suppose to get 60 minutes of activity a day.

Build a Healthy Base You can help your body be healthy and function well by eating a variety of foods. Make grains, fruits, and vegetables the foundation of your meals. Grains, fruits, and vegetables supply nutrients and minerals to your body. Many of these foods are also good sources of fiber: the part of grains, fruits, and vegetables that the body cannot break down.

Fiber Helps remove waste out of your system. May help prevent some diseases. Heart disease

Choose Sensibly Avoid consuming too much sugar A lot of foods have large amounts of added sugar. Such as: soft drinks, fruit punch, cakes, cookies, candy, and ice cream. Foods containing added sugar can lead to tooth decay. Read nutrition labels to find sugars: Main words: corn syrup, sucrose, or dextrose.

Choose Sensibly Avoid consuming too much salt Sodium a mineral in salt helps the body regulate fluids and blood pressure. Your body only needs small amounts of sodium. (¼ Teaspoon) Too much sodium can lead to: High blood pressure Decrease the amount of calcium in your body, weakening your bones. To cut down on salt eat more: low sodium foods such as herbs, and spices to season foods, go easy on salty snacks.

Choose Sensibly Avoid consuming too much Fat. Good nutrition depends on an eating plan that is low in cholesterol and saturated fat. Cholesterol: is a waxy substance used by the body to build cells and make other substances. Saturated Fats tend to raise the body’s level of cholesterol. Which can increase: Risk of heart disease, and stroke. Choose food low in saturated fat. Keep your overall intake to no more than 30% of daily calories.
