Objectives 1. Learn how to talk about the places in an apartment. 2. Learn the expressions to show surprise. 3. Get to know the items in an apartment and learn how to describe the placement of the items. 4. Learn how to describe a particular apartment or house. 5. Pronunciation: rising intonation to show surprise.

Lesson A—Housing 1. Pictures of different places in an apartment are provided to make students be familiar with them.

2. Distinguish several pairs of words: 1) yard vs. garden 2) balcony vs. deck 3) porch vs. foyer 4) first floor vs. ground floor 5) house, apartment, flat, bungalow, villa 3. Do Exercise A on P86. 4. Pair work to describe your own apartment or house.

5. Listen to Track 1-6-1 and Track 1-6-2 and do the exercises on P87. 6. Listen to Track 1-6-3 and do the exercise on P88. 7. Listen to Track 1-6-4 and Track 1-6-5 and do the exercises on P88-89. 8. Practice Pronunciation on P91. Homework 1: What kind of apartment do you like? Please make a floor plan as Exercise A on P86 shows.

Speaking: Expressions of showing surprise 1. Useful expressions of showing surprise on P92. 2. Listen to Track 1-6-11 and imitate it. 3. Pair work to make similar conversation as shown in Track 1-6-11, with the information in blue changed.

Useful expressions of showing preferences: --I like living in a dorm. --I prefer to live alone rather than sharing a room with somebody. --I’d rather live in a dorm. --I won’t think of living with a host family. --I’m rather more interested in living with a host family. --It’s better to live with other students around my age.

Living with a host family Advantages: 1) A private bedroom 2) Utilities such as gas, water and electricity, usually paid for by the host family 3) Food for two meals per day – In some cases, students will be expected to prepare their own food 4) Cheap 5) The best way to experience a different culture Disadvantages: 1) Sign a contract with the host family 2) Restrained in a certain family 3) Have not many chances to make friends

Living in a dormitory Advantages: 1) More freedom with students of similar ages 2) Make more friends 3) Simpler life—no cooking, etc. 4) Your own computer room Disadvantages: Not like a home Too many dorm rules Expensive

5. Group work to debate the topic: Living with a host family vs. living in a dormitory Think about the following questions: 1) How to stay happily and harmoniously with a host family? 2) How to keep a good relation with your roommates /roomies?
