Nut (Goddess of the Sky) By Samir & Matthew

Who was she She was the grandchild of Ra (the first king of Egypt and deity of the sun), She was the goddess of the sky. Her husband was Geb (goddess of the Earth), he was also her brother. Together they had multiple children Osiris, Horus, Isis, Set, and Nephthys.

In this photo it was said her arms and legs were the pillars of the sky, as her feet and hands touched the four cardinal points of the horizon. The sun god Re was said to enter her mouth after setting in the evening and travel through her body during the night to be reborn from her vulva each morning. Underneath her lay Geb (god of earth) looking up at his sister wife, It is believed that at night, Nut and Geb would meet as the goddess comes down from the sky causing darkness

Book of the Dead In the Book of the Dead, Nut was seen as a mother- figure to the sun god Ra, who at sunrise was known as Khepera and took the form of a scarab beetle (at noon he was Ra at his full strength, and at sunset he was known as Tem who was old and weakening). She was also called on to help the deceased in one of the spells of the Book of the Dead, which was the chapter on sniffing the air.

Protector of the Dead and Resurrections As a mother who rebirths Ra everyday, she became connected with the underworld and the idea of resurrection and the tomb. She was a friend to the dead whose role resembled that of a mother-protector in the soul’s journey to the land of the dead. She often painted on the inside of the sarcophagus and coffins, protecting its content until the dead is reborn. In one myth, the soul of the pharaoh would enter her during death and would only come out at the time of resurrection. It was also said her back held the heavens from falling. Protector of the Dead and Resurrections
