Destination Asia

Zonta Club of New Territories District 17 Hong Kong, Macau, Philippine, Singapore, Thailand 77 Clubs 2409 Members District Projects Anti-violence against women & girls Ending child marriage Area 4 – Philippines super-typhoon victims Governor Teresa Lin Zonta Club of New Territories Hong Kong District 17 covers Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Philippines and Thailand. We have 77 clubs and 2,409 members. Majority is from Philippines 1,500 and 600 from Thailand. District 17 is vibrant and is still growing. This district has work closely with activities integrated across countries. The friendship and bonding is close. This facilitates collaborations among clubs. The club presidents have high team spirit and things are moving ahead. The interesting part is the diversity of cultures. We learn so much from each other.   Starting with the biennium our service and advocacy projects have started. Recent visits to service projects reveals more focused approach to anti-violence against women and girls as well as end child marriage theme. I am very impressed with the work done in partnership with local non-profit organization who knows the local needs and requirements. Recently a super-typhoon hits Philippines and Hong Kong. In Philippines this super-typhoon damaged homes, take away lives with landslides. Our Area 4 clubs in north Philippines immediately started projects, for example, to help 100 single moms to rebuild their homes in addition to other projects that enable the communities to restore to normal as fast as possible. My salute to the Zontians in Area 4 District 17.

District 25 Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka 14 Clubs Governor Shahnaz Nathani Zonta Club of Colombo II Sri Lanka Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka 14 Clubs Formerly part of District 17 Service Project Water filters to schools & villages Location (countries/states): India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal Number of clubs: 14 A fun fact about your district: Our countries were formerly part of District 17, but in 1990 due to rapid increase in membership, a new district 25 was formed comprising India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. A short description of a project your district has worked on: An interesting project one of the clubs did was to provide water filters to 75 schools and villages in the North East of our country.  The water here is contaminated with chemicals, which causes kidney diseases.  By filtering the water, 75,000 children now have access to clean drinking water.

District 26 Japan 50 Clubs Hosted 2018 Zonta International Convention Governor Akiko Kinoshita Zonta Club of Kitakyushu Japan District #:26 Location (countries/states):Japan Number of clubs:50 A fun fact about your district:Just finished sponsoring the World Convention in Yokohama. Still enjoying the bonding which was created among our clubs by working together for the great event. A short description of a project your district has worked on: We have just started to tackle “Ending Child Marriage.” It is not a familiar subject for many Japanese so we are to start with learning the situation in the world, especially in Asian countries and we will decide what and how we can contribute. District 31 Mongolia, Republic of China (Taiwan) 22 Clubs 5 Golden Z & 7 Z Clubs Rose Day Activism Walk Service projects in Mongolia Dental Check-ups Say No to Violence activism with youth Sewing machines for training center Governor May (Mei-Hong) Wen Zonta Club of Kaohsiung Yuhsiuan, Republic of China (Taiwan) District #: 31 Location (countries/states):Taiwan (Republic of China) and Mongolia Number of clubs: 22. over 600 members A fun fact about your district: District 31 Zontians love to take photos! The other fact is that we take responsibility seriously. For example, the Z & Golden Z committee chair can always establish a new Z and/or Golden Z clubs supported by the club she belongs to. There are currently 5 clubs in universities and 7 clubs in high schools. There are 2 clubs, one Z and one Golden Z, in forming. A short description of a project your district has worked on: We have engaged with the Zonta International headquarters plans for gender equality and the fight against gender-based violence, such as a community activism-walking event on Rose day. It started from 3 years ago, and we plan to keep doing this in this biennial. In 2017, we attended an overseas service trip to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, who had joined District 31 in 2016. We conducted three social service projects in May, 2017. The first was a dental checkup performed by local dentists trained by a professional team from Taiwan. The second activity concerned activism and engaging in the local youth community. A presentation on “Say No to violence” and gender equality was given to 150 high schools students. Thirdly, 20 sewing machines were donated to a future training center in Khord City, around 1500 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar. By providing service ourselves and seeing positive responses with our own eyes, we keep our own passions strong and hope to have contributed to Zonta’s International visibility and our mission of gender equality. This project won the third place of ZI District Service Award in this biennial. Lastly, Taiwan is the leading country to pass the "Domestic Violence Prevention Act" in Asia in 1998. We are proud to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this accomplishment by holding the event of "Ride with Us to End Domestic Violence!" Here is the link to see our video on YouTube.
