Presentation on Silent Sight Killing Eye Diseases

Every 5 seconds a Person becomes BLIND

EVERY 1 MINUTE A CHILD GOES BLIND

5 CRORES OF PEOPLE ACROSS THE GLOBE ARE BLIND AND THE NUMER WILL TOUCH 7.5 CRORES BY 2020

OVER 1.5 CRORE ARE BLIND IN INDIA

80% OF THE BLINDNESS IN INDIA IS TREATABLE / CURABLE

Causes of Blindness in India Cataract Glaucoma Retinal Diseases & Diabetic Retinopathy Corneal Diseases Orbital Diseases Paediatric Eye Diseases

CATARACT Normal Eye Cataract Eye

BY 2020 INDIA IS GOING TO BE CAPITAL OF WORLD IN ??? DIABETES

DIABETIC POPULATION IN INDIA BY 2020 WILL BE 13 CRORES ANDHRA PRADESH IS GOING TO TOP THE LIST.

ICMR data However contrary to the projections the prevalence of diabetes has nearly doubled in the last 11 years DM – 6.24 Crores Impaired hyperglycaemia – 7.72 Crores Total – 13.96 Crores

Most Worrying complication of Diabetes! Loss of Vision 46% Heart attack 24% Kidney Failure 17% Limb Amputation 7% Impotence 3%

How does diabetes affect vision? Could develop cataracts (clouding of the naturally clear lens in the eye). May develop glaucoma (a disease of the optic nerve). Risk of developing diabetic retinopathy: damage occurs to the fragile blood vessels inside the retina.

DIABETIC RETINOPATHY GLAUCOMA 60% OF DIABETIC PATIENTS CAN BECOME BLIND DUE TO SILENT SIGHT KILLING DISEASES CALLED DIABETIC RETINOPATHY AND GLAUCOMA

THE SNEAK THIEF OF VISION GLAUCOMA THE SNEAK THIEF OF VISION 1.13 CRORE OF PEOPLE IN INDIA ARE SUFFERING FROM GLAUCOMA 1.06 CRORE HAVE BECOME BLIND

THE SNEAK THIEF OF VISION GLAUCOMA THE SNEAK THIEF OF VISION Normal Vision Early Glaucoma Vision End Stage Moderate Glaucoma Vision Advanced Glaucoma Vision

YOU COULD BE AFFECTED WITH GLAUCOMA If you are above 40 years of age (risk increases with age). If you have family history of glaucoma. If you have Diabetes or eye injury. If you have high Intra Ocular Pressure (IOP). If you have short sightedness (minus power glasses). If you have experienced pain, redness colored hallows in your eyes. If you are frequently changing glass prescription. If you have used steroids in the past.

WHY GLAUCOMA IS SNEAK THIEF OF VISION Patients cannot recognize loss of vision in early stages, only Peripheral vision is lost In early stages. Moderate Glaucoma Vision Advanced Glaucoma Vision End Stage Normal Vision

FOR EARLY DETECTION OF GLAUCOMA Eye check-up atleast once in a year: 1. Testing of Intra Ocular Pressure (IOP). 2. Gonio Scopy. 3. Visual Fields Test. 4. OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography). Treatment of Glaucoma: I. Timely Medication. II. Laser Treatment. III. Surgery.

Out of 13.96 Crore Diabetics in India 60% are effected by Silent Sight Killer Disease called Diabetic Retinopathy Normal Vision Vision with Diabetic Retinopathy

TYPES OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY 1. Nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) Early stage diabetic retinopathy Normal Fundus Non proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (NPDR)

TYPES OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) Later stage diabetic retinopathy Normal Fundus Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR)

SYMPTOMS OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY In the initial stages no Symptoms are seen such as loss of Vision or Pain. Who is at Risk ? All Diabetic Patients. Diabetic Patients suffering from Hypertension (BP). Diabetic Patients suffering from Kidney problem. Diabetic Patients suffering from Anemia (Low Hemoglobin).

IDENTIFICATION OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY Diabetic Retinopathy is a Silent Sight Killer Disease . It can be graded Only with Sophisticated Equipment such as: Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA). Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). Electro Retino Graphy (ERG).

TREATMENT OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY Treatment to Diabetic Retinopathy may not improve vision but can often prevent further deterioration. 1. Laser Treatment . 2. Injection of a Drug (avastin) into the eye along with laser or surgery. 3. Advanced cases may require surgery and Silicone oil or gas may be injected into the vitreous cavity. Preventing Diabetic Retinopathy 1. Complications can be reduced by controlling blood sugar levels, controlled diet, regular exercises. 2. Timely Treatment and regular follow-ups are a must. 3. All Diabetic Patients should get a yearly eye check-up to identify Diabetic Retinopathy.

CORNEAL BLINDNESS Approximately 11 lakh blind population of our Country are waiting for Corneal Transplantation and around 25,000 new cases are being reported every year. Eyes should be donated within 6 hours of Death. Anyone can be a donor, irrespective of age, sex, blood group or religion. Persons suffering from hypertension, diabetes can also donate eyes. Before Surgery After Surgery

CAUSES OF CORNEAL BLINDNESS Allergies. Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye). Corneal Infections. Dry Eye. Ocular Herpes. Herpes Zoster (Shingles). Keratoconus. Pterygium.

Pterygium

PAEDIATRIC OPHTHALMOLOGY Refractive Errors Myopic Normal Vision Myopic Vision Only near objects clear.

PAEDIATRIC OPHTHALMOLOGY Refractive Errors Hyperopia Normal Vision Hyperopia Vision Distant objects are clear, and nearby objects appear blurry.

PAEDIATRIC OPHTHALMOLOGY Refractive Errors Astigmatism Normal Vision Astigmatism Vision Un clear vision

SQUINT Treatment of Squint Squint in India is considered as a mark of luck, but its not. If Squint is treated in early stages, it can be corrected and further vision loss arrested. Treatment of Squint Some children with squint get corrected by using glasses or eye exercises prescribed by your Paediatric Ophthalmologist. Few others require Squint correction surgery.

TREATMENT OF REFRACTIVE ERRORS AMONG CHILDREN Every Child must be shown to a Paediatric Ophthalmologist before joining the school.
