LEVELS OF ORGANIZATION Species - individuals that can breed with one another Population - all the individuals of the same species (ducks) in an area

A population is always composed of same-species organisms

Community - all the populations that live together in an area

Ecological Methods - how do we study ecology? Observing Experimenting Modeling Models are used to make predictions.

Sometimes, you must be cautious in how you model data.... Imagine graphing a person's height as they age based on how they grew until they were 18.  One might predict that by the time they were age 30, they would be 22 feet tall.    Instead, the model should account for the slowing of growth during their teens (S-shaped curve).

Cyanobacteria is the most common photosynthetic bacteria on planet. This organisms is a major reason for why our atmosphere has enough oxygen to allow plants and animals to live! Cyanobacteria was the first organisms that used H2O instead of H2S or other compounds as a source of electrons and hydrogen for fixing CO2 .  They were able to synthesize organic compounds from water and CO2  By releasing Oxygen as a by-product of their photosynthesis they in affect created an oxygen revolution!

Chemosynthesis - makes food from chemicals (some bacteria do this) Some bacteria live in deep ocean vents, and make their food from chemicals in those vents
