2012 LSCOBA Global Reunion & World Conference Plenary Session #B: Value-added Support to LSC Presenter: Mark Huang Immediate Past President of LSCOBA-HK 2019/4/3

Draft Mission Statement Value-added Support By definition, this refers to: Non-capital initiatives that enhances the quality of offerings to LSC students By sharing the wealth of knowledge and real world experience accumulated by all OBs Draft Mission Statement To develop a sustainable system where the international and cross-professional expertise and experience possessed by OBs around the world become accessible to LSC students and young old boys, in order to enhance their knowledge and overall competitiveness. 2019/4/3

The Guiding Principles The LS Spirit has no geographical boundary and all efforts offered by OBs are part of the global initiatives To be compatible with LSC’s policy and supportive towards LSC’s education focus and priorities To tap into the resource pools of the entire OBA network regardless of project nature To build upon existing programs and functions, in particular, LSCOBA Hong Kong To be “support-ready” for LSC and her students 2019/4/3

Agenda for Today Understand the present situation What are some of the ongoing programs? What is already on the drawing board? Understand our customers’ needs (LSC, students, parents, even Young OBs etc.) Broad categories of value-added support Build consensus on a conceptual framework Identify and agree on near-term tasks 2019/4/3

The Present Situation Under the new DSE program, every student completes 6 years in LSC, and all take the DSE examination (vs 7 HKCEE leading to 4 HKAL classes ) More graduates per year (compared to HKAL), but results are more spread out, and student needs more diverse 2019/4/3

The Present Situation Graduates more year younger … and one year less mature F.5 boys are the “leaders” in the SA Exco, Club Chairmen, Lasallite Editor etc, yet, there is no more honey-moon year Outcome of student initiatives could be lowered 2019/4/3

The Present Situation Curriculum calling for “Other Learning Experiences” (OLE) Not all students have initiative to find OLEs or even to take up offerings when given to them The OBA offers them programs on work shadowing / Career Days / interview workshops 2019/4/3

The Present Situation On entering University or other Tertiary institutes, the academically sounds students will generally do fine. Those who struggled in the DSE may get into a non-degree program, and could benefit from some support All these YOBs need support, but in different ways 2019/4/3

The Customer’s Needs Stakeholders: a. Students’ Needs Academic and Career Planning eg. school subject selection (F4) and education plans, and university subject choices, applications and guidance. Personal skills, growth and development eg. improving self-confidence, time management with sports / music and studies, resolving conflicts, handling stress and exam pressures, family or friends / dating relationships, Researching into and Arriving in a foreign city: OBs from that city can help the Lasallian settle into the city and university 2019/4/3

The Customer’s Needs Stakeholders: b. Parents, Teachers, Brothers and the school In my view, these parties have consistent wants as the students, ie. to offer something more to help the students along their way from LSC education to tertiary education, and also to grow up as balanced responsible young men. 2019/4/3

Needs to Action However, the challenge here is – No one, neither the students, parents, nor the school knows what they can use the OBs network for, how to approach them, and how such support is offered. That I believe is the challenge of this session. 2019/4/3

Modes for offering Value-added Support from overseas 1. Distance support: By email / electronic means, telephone 2. When overseas OBs return to HK and can go back to school or go to other HK venues 3. Students arriving at an overseas’ city for further education 4. Others? 2019/4/3

Possible Value-added Support from overseas OBs 1. Mentoring or being OB-Buddies to students?? 2. Manning an Enquiry hotline / Email for students / parents wanting information on studies in a country / a certain city?? 3. Academic study / career advice and sharings?? 4. Building up an overseas OBs presence and creating interest in the Facebook La Salle Old Boys’ Ties network and/or Linkedin.com, where students and YOBs are comfortable to bring up their needs and ask for advice?? 5. Your ideas … ?? 2019/4/3

Or a conceptual framework… Should there be a frame work where the GA organize a formal program with LSC, with something like the following process in place: LSC informs GA of some specific needs for students Sponsor(s) drafts a proposal to LSC based on the needs LSC evaluates the proposals, communicates with sponsor(s) and transforms proposals into projects Well defined project description is provided to GA by LSC GA will support the sponsor(s) in planning and implementing the projects according to the project description. 2019/4/3

Your input on: What is a working channel to offer OBs support to students? Additional channels to offer value-added supports Additional categories where OBs can offer value-added supports Suggestions on potential initiatives What are the near-term tasks the GA should focus on (say for the next 12 months)? Next steps? 2019/4/3
