Faculty and Staff Research Support at College of DuPage

Rationale: COD is an evidence-based, innovative community college and can contribute to the body of knowledge of what works with undergraduate students. Student collaboration with faculty on research enhances their educational experiences and improves retention, particularly in STEM fields. Students who participate as subjects in classroom research gain knowledge about raising important questions, developing methods for answering them, and using research to make sound decisions. Research support can be a strong recruitment tool for highly qualified faculty and staff. Publication and presentation of original research will expand and enhance the reputation of the college locally, regionally, and nationally.

Types of research eligible for support: College-Initiated Research: Any research conducted by the college or a specific department and conducted by Research & Analytics Employee-Initiated Research: Any research initiated by an employee or committee, but geared toward college purposes Employee-Initiated Undergraduate Research Experiences: Any collaborative research project initiated by an employee, but including students, for the purpose of helping students develop research skills Employee-Initiated Individual Research: Any research initiated by an employee for the purpose of his or her own professional development

The process… Research ideas in their formative stage Initial meetings with the co-Chairs of the IDEA Center for help as needed to structure the project and learn the likely types of available support Ideas are put into proposal form with assistance as needed Proposals are submitted for IRB approval With IRB approval, the request for support is completed Research support is approved by the Research Committee Research ideas are written into a proposal and submitted for IRB approval With IRB approval, the request for support is completed Research support is approved by the Research Committee Research ideas in their formative stage Research ideas developed and ready to implement

Important to Note: Participation in research is an optional opportunity for faculty or staff, not a requirement. Participation by a faculty member in any one of the forms of research outlined above would not in any way be used as a part of a faculty evaluation. Participation in research will not be used to determine compensation other than support for the research costs themselves as approved by the Research Committee. Participation in research will not be a factor when considering class load or other changes in role responsibilities.
