We have averaged a little more than one school shooting a week in 2018!

A school shooting defined A shooting that involved at least one person being shot (not including the shooter) A shooting that occurred on school grounds Includes grades K through college/university level Includes gang violence, fights and domestic violence includes accidental discharge of a firearm as long as the first two parameters are met

Parkland, FL – Feb. 14 Former student opens fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School killing 17 students and staff. Renews national debate on school safety, mental health and guns. Fuels federal legislation.

Lexington Park, MD March 20 Student opened fire with a handgun. One student killed and one wounded. SRO Deputy Blaine Gaskill responds to the gunfire. Deputy Gaskill fires a round striking the shooter as the shooter shoots himself and dies from wounds.

Ocala, FL – April 20 Student opens fire in school prior to a planned student demonstration against gun violence. One student wounded in the ankle. Suspect immediately taken into custody by SRO Jimmy Long

Dixon, IL – May 16 Student opens fire on classmates practicing for graduation. SRO Mark Dallas responds and stops the incident by shooting the assailant.

Santa Fe, TX – May 18 Student opened fire with a shotgun and a revolver Ten people killed (nine students and one teacher). Shooter was confronted early on by two SRO’s.

Noblesville, IN – May 25 Student opened fire with two handguns. One student and one teacher wounded. Shooter stopped by teacher along with assistance from SRO.

NASRO Training NASRO teaches the SRO Triad concept. Law Enforcement Education Informal Counselor Law Enforcement

Goals of an SRO Program Bridge the gap between law enforcement and students. Increase positive attitudes towards law enforcement. Teach the value of our legal system. Promote respect for people and property. Reduce juvenile delinquency by helping students formulate an awareness of rules, authority and justice. Goals of the SRO Program. Before showing the points on the slide, have groups discuss what they believe to be the goals of an effective SRO program.

The SRO's Role on Campus: The Triad of SRO Responsibility: Supporting the Education Mission as Law-Enforcement Officer, Teacher, and Counselor: Meeting with principals each morning to exchange information. Meeting with campus and local agencies to understand student assessments. Listening to students' concerns. Providing counseling to victims.

The SRO's Role on Campus: The Triad of SRO Responsibility: Supporting the Education Mission as Law-Enforcement Officer, Teacher, and Counselor: 5. Coordinating a Crime Scene. 6. Instructing students on technology awareness, domestic violence, traffic-stop education, and Bullying.

Developing intervention, skills-development, and healthy-lifestyle programs for class instruction. 8. Conducting home visits. 9. Leading free summer day-camps for middle school students.
