FOUR TYPES OF SENTENCES

PHRASES vs. CLAUSES What is a PHRASE? What is a CLAUSE? Two or more words with a subject OR a verb. Parts of a sentence. The funny, energetic teacher (Noun phrase) has been trying (Verb phrase) to make sushi (Infinitive phrase) at school (Prepositional phrase) What is a CLAUSE? Two or more words with a subject AND a verb in a sentence. The funny, energetic teacher is late to class

PARTS OF A COMPLETE SENTENCE SENTENCES A sentence is a sequence of words which begins with a capital letter and ends with a period (or ! Or ?) It has a subject It has a verb It has a COMPLETE IDEA The funny, energetic, English teacher has been trying to make sushi at school.

INDEPENDENT CLAUSE Independent clause can be called the MAIN CLAUSE. The students enjoyed the grammar lesson. Independent clause can be called the MAIN CLAUSE. It has a subject and a verb. It is a complete idea. It can stand alone (INDEPENDENT)

DEPENDENT CLAUSE that the students enjoyed the grammar lesson It is DEPENDENT upon an independent clause. It has a subject and a verb, but the verb is not the main verb. It does NOT express a complete idea. It cannot stand alone (DEPENDENT) It begins with the indicator that or If, and Wh- words.

# 1 SIMPLE SENTENCE One INDEPENDENT clause It has a subject and a verb Expresses a complete thought. Laura likes pizza. Some students like to study in the mornings. David and Habib play soccer every afternoon. Raflyna goes to the library and studies everyday.

COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS

#3 COMPLEX SENTENCE INDEPENDENT + DEPENDENT Dependent clause begins with a subordinating conjunction and it can be at the beginning or the end of the sentence. It is less important to the main idea clause. Natalis did her homework while she watched a movie. While Natalis watched a movie, she did her homework. Since Ndvhuho passed her English test, Kubra has been very happy. Kubra has been very happy since Ndvhuho passed her English test.

Laura went to the store, and she bought paint while Kausar was sleeping. Because Sahrudin paid attention, he got an A on the test, and I was so happy.
