American Revolution DBQ Project Key Question: What were the roles of Women, African Americans, and Europeans in the American Revolution?

Lesson Objective To successfully understand and answer document based questions on people who contributed to America winning the American Revolution.

What is a Document Based Question??? A DBQ is a type of short response question that is unique to social studies class. The question is based on evidence and information from a primary or secondary document. DBQ’s will be present on both Regents exams in social studies in high school, which are graduation requirements.

How do you Answer a Document Based Question??? Read the question. Identify the author of the document Identify the date of the document Read the entire document or look at the picture. Restate and Answer the question using information from the document. Quotes for written docs Observations for images

Example Document Based Question Document # 1 “ I long to hear that you have declared an independency…in the new code of laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make, I desire you would remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not push such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands.” Abigail Adams From a letter to her husband, John Adams during the Continental Congress, 1776

Example Document Based Question Document # 1 1A. What news is Abigail Adams hoping to hear from her husband? 2B. What does Abigail Adams want her husband to do?

DBQ Project Part 1 DBQ Packet Independently answer the questions for document’s 2-8 in your packet. Be sure to use complete sentences. When you are done with the document packet, read the next few slides on this slideshow.

DBQ Project Part 2 Essay Preparation Complete the evidence graphic organizer using the document packet. Use the example from document 1 to help you organize the evidence for documents 2-8.

DBQ Project Part 3 Writing The DBQ Essay Using the evidence graphic organizer, 3 in-text citations from 3 documents in the DBQ packet and your own outside information, type a 5 paragraph essay that answers the question below: Essay Question: What were the roles of Women, African Americans, and Europeans in the American Revolution?

Making In-Text Citations: In this project, you will have to make 3 in-text citations from 3 different documents: (#’s 1-8). In-text citations tell the reader where you got your evidence and information from, which also help you to answer the essay questions. Don’t cite in your introduction of conclusion…. Below are examples of how to make the proper in-text citations in your document based essay: EXAMPLES: According to document 2, women contributed enormously to the war effort by, __________ and ___________ (Document 2). Evidence from document 7 suggests that Europeans greatly helped America win the Revolution when it asserted, “____________________” (Document 7).

Writing the Introduction Paragraph 1: Introduction Step 1: Create a catchy sentence that will grab the reader’s attention. Example: “The American ____________was a long and arduous struggle for both sides with many roadblocks on the way.” Step 2: Restate the main idea of the documents you read. Example: “Groups such as ___________, ____________, and __________ helped the Americans __________ the American ____________.” Step 3: State what the essay will be about without using the words I, me or my…. USE COMMAS,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Example: “Women, African Americans, and Europeans all assisted in the war-effort in ways such as ___________, _____________ and _____________.” If it were not for the three above-mentioned groups, American independence and the nation of the United States would not have been possible.”

Paragraph 2: Role of Women Center and bold the title for all of your body paragraphs like the example below: The Role of Women In your first sentence, explain the traditional role of women in society……….Give examples…… “Traditional, women have had limited roles outside of the home because they were expected to ____________ and _____________.” Discuss key dates, events and people…… Abigail Adams……… Example: “Abigail Adams, the wife of Founding Father John Adams, was a close advisor to her husband……. She gave him advice and tips on how to include women in the new nation…….” Use Transitional Phrases in each body paragraph, especially when beginning and ending each paragraph. Example: First, secondly, last or lastly, then, after, later………… Never end a paragraph with a citation of explanation of a citation. Include 1 in-text citations from 1 document that shows or explains the role of women….. Example….. (Document # ___).

Paragraph 3: Role of African Americans Type the title bold, size 12 and center like this…… The Role of African Americans In your first sentence, state that African Americans fought as soldiers on both the British and Colonial sides. Provide examples of the roles African Americans took….. Soldiers……. And…… Discuss key events, people and dates: Example: African Americans served as soldiers in the American Army due to the Militia Act of 1775……They struggled to survive in a winter camp at Valley Forge…. (Document, 5). Use Transitional Phrases in each body paragraph, especially when beginning and ending each paragraph. Example: First, secondly, last or lastly, then, after, later………… Never end a paragraph with a citation of explanation of a citation. Include 1 citation from 1 document in your packet as evidence…..

Paragraph 4: Role of Europeans The Role of Europeans In your first sentence, state that Europeans from France and Germany fought as soldiers on both the British and Colonial sides. List the roles of Europeans: Example: Europeans from the country of _________ did ______________ during the war. Cite document 7 or 8: Example: German and Polish officers such as _______ and _________ helped to train American troops to prepare them to battle the British (Document, 7). Develop a concluding sentence that sums up the importance of Europeans in the American Revolution: Who did they help? The Americans or the British?

Paragraph 5: Your Conclusion Type your title, bold, centered, underlined: Conclusion Begin with a concluding phrase…. It is evident that ….. In conclusion, It is clear that…….. Sum up the main idea of how different groups of people took important roles during America’s war for independence. “Women, Blacks and Europeans all took part in the American Revolution. They all had differing roles including, _______, _______ and ________. “ Develop a concluding statement that sums up the importance of what you have discussed. Sample: “If different groups did not take the role of soldiers and support people, it is likely that America would not have _________________ the American ________________.” America would not exist if it were not for ___________ roles of ________________, ____________ and _____________.”

Final Checklist: Don’t turn in your work without reading the list below!!!! Did you double space your paragraphs? Did you type in size 12, Times New Roman font? Did you read over your work and use spell check? Did you save your work as a PDF? Did you cite 3 documents? 1 per body paragraph? Did you use the previous slides before this one to help you type your essay? If you said yes to all of these tips, you are ready to submit your work to Engrade turn-ins!!!!
