Minimum Contests and Participants Requirements NCAA Bylaw 20.10.3.5 Minimum Contests and Participants Requirements

What is a contest? (NCAA Bylaw 17.02.2) A contest is any game, match, exhibition, scrimmage or joint practice session with another institution’s team, regardless of it’s formality, in which competition in a sport occurs.

In each sport, the team shall engage in a minimum number of intercollegiate contests each academic year in order to meet sports sponsorship requirements.

The minimum number of contests must be against four-year, degree granting collegiate institutions.

In individual sports (m & w cross country, m golf, and m & w tennis), the institution’s team shall include a minimum number of participants in each contest that is counted toward meeting the minimum contest requirement.

In team sports (baseball, m & w basketball, m & w soccer, softball and volleyball), each game of a doubleheader, tripleheader, tri-match or tournament shall be counted as one contest.

To count as a contest, the institution’s team shall participate in and complete the contest. For individual sports, the minimum number of participants must participate in and complete the contest.

Scheduled contests that are cancelled or not completed (in accordance with the playing rules of that particular sport) may not be counted.
