A Look at the Author At the age of 14 he decided to be a writer. Born February 27th in 1902 in Salinas, California. Worked during his summers as a hired hand. At the age of 14 he decided to be a writer. 1919-1925: Stanford University Third of 4 children and was the only son During his childhood, Steinbeck learned to appreciate his surroundings loved the Salinas countryside and the nearby Pacific Ocean (would later become out in his writing High school: did well in English and edited the yearbook Went to Stanford to make parents happy but took courses in literature Dropped out of Stanford to work along side migrant workers in CA
