STEPS forward: Tools that are available

Reimaging residency The goal of the five-year $15 million Reimaging Residency grant program is to transform residency training to best address the workforce needs of our current and future health care system.

AMA’s Organized Medical Staff Section discussion items A new opportunity after specialized practice Practice after service or mission work

House of Delegates activity Accessing competency in aging physicians When a hospital closes Policy D-275.956, “Assuring safe and effective care for patients by senior/late career physicians” – identify and convene Physicians 65 and older represent approx. 26% of physicians in the US with 41% actively engaged in patient care Work group noted that very few hospitals have age specific guidelines and that there is evidence that the number of disciplinary actions increases at 65 and 70 After conducting a survey and a search of the literature, the Council on Medical Education proposed a set of guiding principles as a basis for developing guidelines for the screening and assessment of senior/late career physicians. This informational report presented at I-18 was referred back for additional study Hospital closures have significant impact on physicians, residents, medical staff, and patients Explore repository of information regarding the medical staff membership status of affected physicians and residents Important to have easily accessible documentation certifying that departure was not a voluntary activity or due to sanctions

AMA Profile enhancements under consideration DATA Waiver Qualified physicians may apply and be provided with a DATA waiver (colloquially known as a buprenorphine waiver) permitting them to prescribe buprenorphine products to combat opioid dependency. DATA waivers are also available to physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs). Physician waivers come with patient limits of 30, 100, and 275 – a physician may only treat up to the designated patient limit at one time. PA and NP waivers come with a patient limit of 30.
