Fundraising: More Margin, More Mission Minnesota Literacy Council Board of Directors Orientation January 28, 2013

An agency snapshot: income

And expenses (FY ending 6/30/11)

Does nonprofit mean no profit? What’s the difference between a nonprofit and for-profit organization? It’s ok to earn a profit…in fact, it’s a good thing Profit allows us to provide more value and ensures financial health

Financial goals Government grants – spend it all, but don’t overspend Fees – what revenue can be generated from our services? Fundraising – how can we find new and retain current donors?

What is fundraising here? Corporate and foundation grant seeking Individual donations Events (like the raffle) Sponsorships

Why fundraise? To achieve our vision and mission Cover current activities Respond to needs Initiate a great idea Save for a rainy day

Fundraising goals this year Corp and foundation grants, $409,022 Individual giving, $166,090 Raffle, $10,000

Fundraising and events calendar July August September October November December   Beyond Books open house Power of Learning Luncheon Give to the Max Day 40th anniversary/ fall fundraising letter mailed/ e-blasts January February March April May June Luncheon sponsorship/ Raffle items Spring fundraising letter mailed Beyond Books open house/ raffle/

Long-term vision: a focus on individual giving Build individual giving to more closely mirror national charitable giving percentages 80% individuals, 20% corp/fdns

Individual giving facts From $82K in FY08 to $166K, 100% growth! Now 700 donors annually 22 “Literacy Heroes” ($1,000+ for 5 years) 27 donors make up 47% of total Single largest gift, $500,000 50% retention

Nearing the tipping point We are nearing a point where contributions will not just fill budget gaps, but assure mission growth More margin = more mission

How can I help? Develop your story – Tap into your passion; get to know the literacy council; meet staff, learners, VISTAs and volunteers Share your story – Be a “third-party” voice on a site visit or speak at an event

How can I help? Events - Attend or volunteer for Beyond Books open houses and Power of Learning Luncheon Network - Invite your volunteers, friends, family to events – use your social media network to get the word out

How can I help? Give - Make a personal contribution to the literacy council – it matters to donors and funders! Ideate! Forward your funding and fundraising ideas
