2nd Semester Expectations Ms. DiOrio Rm 109 www.tabbhighchemistry.weebly.com

Attendance – THS Wide Research shows that missing 10% of school (approximately 18 days or 2 days per month) can drastically effect a student’s academic success. THS is making an effort to address issues of attendance both excused and unexcused. Truancy Chronic Absences Unexcused absences All absences for any reason Excused Unexcused Suspensions

Attendance – THS Wide TRUANCY 3-4: Meet with Student Connection Coach Unexcused absences TRUANCY 3-4: Meet with Student Connection Coach 5: THS letter home 6: School Attendance Contract 7-10: Truancy referral to the School Board Office 11 or more: Truancy officer files a complaint with the York County Court System

Attendance – THS Wide EXCUSED ABSENCES 1-10: Bring a detailed note from your parent or guardian 11 or more: Doctor’s note required Keep in mind, just having a note may not be enough to excuse an absence. It is the reason for the absence that determines if it is excused.

Attendance As a teacher, I am generally not informed of notes that go through attendance. If you are absent, it is a good idea to email all your teachers to let them know what is going on. This is especially important if you are going to be absent for more than a day. Surgery Vacation Death in the family Severe illness (mono, pneumonia, etc.) jdiorio@ycsd.york.va.us

Makeup Work Students are allowed one day for make-up work for every day of excused absence. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to get makeup work from the drawers at the front of the classroom or off the class website. Failure on the part of the student to complete make-up work on time will result in the student receiving a lowered grade on the assignment. Students may still make up work missed on days if an unexcused absence but it will be graded as a late assignment.

Making Up Tests and Quizzes It is expected that all students will take tests and quizzes on time regardless of missed class that unit. Extenuating circumstances should be discussed with me PRIOR to the day of the assessment. If absent the day of the test or quiz, makeups for that assessment will be the next Tuesday and Thursday afterschool. If you miss these afterschool makeups, you will take the assessment the next time you are physically present in class.

Making Up Labs All labs have a makeup version on the class website. These makeup versions either have sample data to perform calculations, videos of the lab being performed, or an altered assignment to complete. Again, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to retrieve these assignments.

Late Work I will accept late work through the end of the grading period. Generally, late work receives a 10% penalty for every school day an assignment is late. Ex: An assignment turned in the next class is 2 days late – max grade: 80% For everyday homework that I have shown the key for in class, I will give a max grade of 1 out of 4 points.

Lab Attire – A Reminder What is appropriate lab attire? Closed-toe shoes Long pants with NO RIPS OR HOLES Long hair tied back Safety goggles worn at all times in the lab Failure adhere to this expectation will result in removal from lab and a grade of “0” for lab participation. Students that do not have appropriate lab attire may complete the makeup lab available on the website.

Technology in Class I will no longer tolerate the presence of cell phones, tablets, or laptops in my class unless being used explicitly for instruction led by the teacher. Failure adhere to this expectation will result in confiscation of the device for the remainder of class. Continued issues will result in an infraction for inappropriate use of technology.

Earbuds Absolutely no earbuds are permitted in my class at any time. Not during instruction. Not during classwork. Not during lab. Not during assessment. Failure adhere to this expectation will result in confiscation of the earbuds for the remainder of class. Continued issues will result in an infraction for inappropriate use of technology.

Leaving Class ALL students must sign out if leaving the classroom to include date, reason, time out, and time in. If you do not sign out or leave without permission (even if you sign out), that is considered skipping and you will receive an infraction for attendance.

End of Class Students may stand up in the area of their desk, but they may NOT crowd the door. I need a clear path in front of my desk and along the side of the classroom leading from the front to the back door. I will remind you if needed, but failure adhere to this expectation will result in an infraction for non- compliance (disorderly conduct).

Afterschool Help Make-up and extra help sessions will be held on Tuesday afternoons from 2:05 to 3:05 PM. If you are SOA or New Horizon’s, let me know ahead of time in writing (send me an email) so I can plan to stay later. If there is no one in my classroom by 2:35, I will not stay all the way until 3:05. Tests and quizzes may also be made up Thursdays afterschool; however, Thursday extra help sessions are reserved for AP Chemistry students.
