School Choice Update for the 2019-2020 Application Window November 2018 Principals’ Meeting Pupil Personnel Services

School Choice Changes for 2018-2019: Transition to electronic applications Implementation of a “newly enrolled” student window (i.e. no prior enrollment in NEISD or returning to NEISD after >1 year absence and the absence was not due to discipline or to avoid a disciplinary assignment) Extension of the 2019-2020 application window by one month Elimination of a “waitlist” for 2019-2020 (all applicants will be either “granted” or denied” with no subsequent offers/calls necessary; affected families will receive a notification letter on Friday, November 9)

School Choice Application Welcome Screen (test version)

School Choice Application Confirmation Screen (test version)

The 2019-2020 School Choice application window: Begins at 7:20 am on December 3, 2018 Ends at the close of the “school” business day on February 28, 2019 There are no exceptions to this window for currently enrolled students.* * Some families meeting the “newly enrolled” student criteria may be applying for both the current school year AND for 2019-2020 Enrollment will be exclusively online – parents/guardians will not need to drop off or pick up a hard copy form (submissions will be electronically time/date stamped to determine order of application). Data processors will no longer maintain receipt logs, verify information provided on the application, or PONY applications weekly. Campuses will need to have a monitored designated computer area for those families who may not have internet access (application is iOS/Android compatible)

School Choice application reminders: Parents/guardians may still submit only 1 application per child No provisions are made for siblings Applicants may not request a Magnet School or other specialized program Students transitioning from Elementary to Middle School or Middle to High School MUST submit a new application for the requested feeder pattern campus Completing an application is not a guarantee of acceptance – home campuses should program for the student as though s/he will be returning, regardless of what is indicated by parent/guardian (staffing models, ARD implications, course choice sheets, etc.) No transportation is provided Students may not be eligible for varsity competition for one calendar year

Additional School Choice considerations: Communicating changes to Assistant Principals/Data Processor/office staff Maintaining “newly enrolled” application process with 5-day approval or denial window Publicizing the application window – mass Blackboard emails, marquees, newsletters, etc. Promoting email account recovery (all School Choice “granted/denied” letters will be sent electronically)

Spring 2019 School Choice “Next Steps” School Choice applicants will be notified via email on or before the last day of May that their application has either been “granted” or “denied.” “Denied” applicants may reapply for the subsequent school year during the next Districtwide window. Hard copy “granted” letters no longer exist. Campus School Choice Point of Contact at “granted” school of choice will upload electronic copy into School Choice Docuware folder. “Granted” applicants will need to accept the available seat at the “granted” school of choice no later than Thursday, June 6 (the one year acceptance provision is being eliminated). Blocking and revocation procedures remain the same.
