In JUNE we will be exploring the value of SELF CONTROL

SELF CONTROL Knowing right from wrong – and acting on it! Willpower Self- discipline Controlling our emotions 7

Self-Discipline The Marshmallow Test https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX_oy9614HQ&feature=youtu.be

Temptation We each have things that we love: Crisps Chocolates Sweets Phones Computers What is your biggest temptation? How do you try to control your urges?

How does it feel when you want something but try not to have it? Temptation In small amounts these are fine but we need Self- Control to prevent us having too much of them. But this can be very hard! How does it feel when you want something but try not to have it?

Song about SELF CONTROL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PnbKL3wuH4&feature=youtu.be

Controlling our Emotions Self-Control is very important in our friendships and relationships. How we respond to situations changes how people feel about us and how they will behave towards us in the future.

Story of Self-Control There was a boy who had a very bad temper. He often lost his temper over very small things and said hurtful things to people or hurt them. The boy’s father saw how the boy was damaging his relationships with his friends and family. So he decided to help him.

Story of Self-Control Every time the boy lost his temper his father told him to hit a nail into the fence in the garden. On day one the boy had to hammer in 7 nails. Over the next week this became fewer and fewer. The boy was delighted one day when he didn’t have to hit in any nails.

Story of Self-Control His father then told him that for every day that he didn’t lose his temper he should pull out one of the nails. After the boy had pulled out all of the nails his father showed him the fence. He told him that although he had pulled out the nails the boy’s actions had left scars on the fence which would never go away.

Story of Self-Control His father explained when you say unkind things or do hurtful things to others it doesn’t matter how many times you say sorry you will have always left a scar. We cannot fix our unkindness. Instead we should think carefully about the words and things we do before we act.

Managing your mind and your emotions SELF CONTROL Managing your mind and your emotions 17

These 2 parts of the brain developed first The Chimp The Human These 2 parts of the brain developed first They think in different ways – it’s like 2 different people being in your head 18

Jumps quickly to an opinion Over reacts Jumps quickly to an opinion Can be ‘paranoid’ (worries about things that aren’t real’) Doesn’t wait for all the information Very quick to judge Emotional Can twist the facts to suit its opinion 19

Open minded, sees others points of view Thinks calmly Open minded, sees others points of view Uses reasoning skills to work things out Searches for all the relevant information Uses ‘common sense’- is rational Logical Looks for the truth and facts, then acts on this 20

The Human must learn to recognise when the Chimp is in charge The Human must learn to recognise when the Chimp is in charge. Don’t try to control it – but learn to manage it! The Chimp is an emotional machine that will take over if you allow it to. It is not good or bad – it is a Chimp! 21

Let’s think about some ways to help yourself when you need to use SELF CONTROL? STOP! Take some deep breaths Talk to someone you trust Get some more information

When I have lost my temper I have lost my reason too, Self Control When I have lost my temper I have lost my reason too, I’m never proud of anything Which angrily I do. When I have talked in anger And my cheeks are flaming red, I have always uttered something Which I wish I had not said. In anger I have never Done a kindly deed or wise. But many things for which I felt I should apologise. In looking back across my life And all I’ve lost or made, I can’t recall a single time When fury ever paid.

A value is a principle that guides our thinking and behaviour How does SELF CONTROL do this?

A quiet moment of prayer or reflection... SELF CONTROL

A prayer for all of us Here in our school Let us be peaceful at all times. Let our rooms be full of happiness and respect for each other. Let love be in our hearts With kindness and compassion for all. Let us remember In learning together, We grow together And succeed together.
