Presentation transcript:

Bell Ringer– 10 minutes Have your homework out Write the learning target in your notebook silently. One of the plant processes you learned last time was TRANSPIRATION. Draw a simple sketch of a plant. Show how water moves through the plant from root to leaves and out of the plant by drawing arrows on your sketch. Name the type of tissue that water is moving through. Why do plants need water? Give two reasons. What is the part that opens and closes to let water out, and bring CO2 in? Draw it and label the parts.

To learn the male and female parts of the flower LEARNING OBJECTIVES To learn the male and female parts of the flower To dissect the flower and label its parts To be able to state how each part relates to reproduction. To be able to defend that flowers are an example of sexual reproduction. Do not just do ticks and crosses – traffic lights – put a picture of traffic lights on the PPT

Female Parts Pistil The female part of a flower. It contains the stigma, the style, and the ovary. Stigma The sticky top of the pistil where pollen lands Style The long part of the pistil that attaches the stigma to the ovary. Ovary This is where the female sex cell, the egg, is made, stored and protected. The pollen eventually makes its way here to fertilize the egg and produce a SEED, which is a “baby plant.” (zygote)

Male Parts Stamen The male part of the flower made up of filament and anther Responsible for producing pollen Filament The stalk that holds up the anther. Anther Located on the top of the filament and holds the pollen Pollen the male sex cell that will fertilize the egg to make a seed. Male Parts Bee covered in Pollen.

Review Pistil Female part. Consists of stigma, style, ovary. Stigma Sticky tip of the pistil. Style The pollen must travel down this part toward the ovary to fertilize the eggs. Ovary Eggs stored here, pollen must get to this part to fertilize the eggs (seeds form when egg is fertilized.) Stamen Male part of flower. Makes pollen. Made up of anther & filament. Anther Top part of stamen, contains pollen. Filament Supports anther. Thin like a thread. Part of stamen. Petal Brightly colored to attract pollinators. Sepal Special leaves that form ring around bottom to protect the buds. Egg Female sex cell, made in the ovary. Pollen .Male sex cell, made in the anther. Review

Label the following flower parts:

Fertilization: when the pollen meets the egg and they join to make a seed

Pollen sticks to insects Pollen sticks to insects. When they move to the next flower, the pollen from the first flower rubs off on the stigma of the second flower.

Most flowers colored or scented, which attracts insects. How do flowers ensure that insects land on them? Most flowers colored or scented, which attracts insects.

During windy days pollen gets blown from one flower to many others During windy days pollen gets blown from one flower to many others. If the pollen of one flower lands on the stigma of another flower it will travel down the ______ to the ______ and fertilize the eggs.

Flower dissection Carefully remove the parts of a flower Lay it out on he bench. Sketch it in your book. Label what each part is & what it does. Complete lab handout
