TASFAA 2019 CPOS Background What is CPOS? Course Program of Study- functionality in Banner that allows financial aid to pay based only on courses that count in the student’s program Why do we need to do this? 34 CFR 668.32 : A student is eligible to receive Title IV, HEA program assistance if the student either meets all of the requirements in paragraphs (a) through (m) of this section. If a student is enrolled in courses that do not count toward his degree, certificate, or other recognized credential, they cannot be used to determine enrollment status unless they are eligible as remedial courses. This means you cannot award the student aid for classes that do not count toward his degree. The Federal Student Aid Handbook, Volume 1, Chapter 1 TASFAA 2019

TASFAA 2019 CPOS at UT Martin School Type: 4 year public, Banner School Size: 7,069 students Fall 2018 Degree Audit System: Was CAPP, but switched to Degree Works Fall 2018 Live Date for CPOS: Spring 2017 Tips/Lessons learned: Make a plan and build a team. Expect problems. We started planning Spring 2016. Fall 2016. Banner/Ellucian problems Spring 2017. Can’t start mid-year, unless your period-based. Fall 2017, we switched to Degree Works. We had technical issues again and had to postpone. Fall 2018, the fixes were still not where they needed to be and had to once again put it off. Fall 2019 is looking hopeful. The good news is, the communication continues and the faculty and advisors all are aware of the importance and impact of students not registering for courses in their program. TASFAA 2019

CPOS at MTSU CPoS Page in Self-Service Portal for Students & Advisors: (Intro Information at top of page) Coursework Toward Program of Study Your eligibility for federal aid and your financial aid cost of attendance (COA) are based on your enrollment in courses that meet outstanding degree requirements. The chart below indicates if the course is considered eligible for federal financial aid purposes, assuming you have completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and meet all eligibility requirements. If you have made any changes in registration (adds/drops) or if you have met with your advisor and requested a change to your program (major/concentration, minor, catalog year) which has been entered and is viewable below, your course(s) will show as "Pending" and will be processed within 24-48 hours. CPOS at MTSU CPoS Page in Self-Service Portal for Students & Advisors: (Bottom Section) 1. Eligible coursework only applies to federal aid. Institutional, state, and private aid is based on total hours attending. However, if your COA is reduced due to ineligible coursework, your state, institutional, and private aid may be reduced given that your total aid cannot exceed COA. 2. FinAid Repeat: After you pass an eligible course, you can repeat the course and have it count towards your federal aid eligibility only one more time. For example, a FinAid Repeat of 1 means that you have passed the course 1 time and can repeat the course one more time for federal aid purposes, as long as it counts as a degree requirement. A FinAid Repeat of 2 or greater indicates that the course can no longer count towards federal aid eligibility, even if it will meet an outstanding degree requirement. 3. If you are auditing a course, it does not count towards your eligibility for federal, state, or institutional aid. 4. Federal aid is based on eligible coursework and first pays for eligible courses. If you have remaining funds, it cannot pay for ineligible courses unless you complete the Federal Aid Authorization to Pay Miscellaneous Charges Form. If you have not previously provided authorization, you can do so by completing this form on PipelineMT. Simply click on Financial Aid in the left menu, click on the Requirements & Holds icon, and click on the form. 5. For questions about how courses apply toward your program of study, please contact your academic advisor. For questions regarding the impact on financial aid, please contact the MT One Stop. 6. Review the FAQ section of our Coursework Toward Program of Study webpage for more details. TASFAA 2019
