Welcome to our unit on Pioneer life. During this unit you will be introduced to the adventures, the hardships, and the characteristics of the American Pioneer.

Just what is a pioneer? A pioneer is someone who goes into a new, unknown area with the purpose of exploring or settling it.

Pioneers have been around for much of this Country’s history. As the population of our Country grew, people started traveling west into the frontier to buy land to farm and live on.

Your assignments for this unit are as follows: Research a famous pioneer and write a 1 page report. Some suggestions are – Davy Crockett, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Daniel Boone or John Chapman (also known as Johnny Appleseed).

Create a block for our friendship quilt The supplies will be given to you in class. They include fabric, fabric markers, books on quilting patterns, and your imagination.

Build a log cabin or covered wagon This project will be made at home after we research log cabins and covered wagons in class. Your project needs to meet the following requirements: Be no larger than 12 x 12 Include you name Be reasonable in design (covered wagons didn’t have air conditioning or radios) AND REMEMBER: This is your project, not your parents.

Create a brochure or flyer advertising a new territory This project will also be done in class and will require using the computer. Your project should include the following, but not limited to: name and description of your territory description of nearby town cost of land at least 2 graphics

Some other fun things we will do will include: Making candles Playing games that pioneer children played. Taking a field trip to a pioneer village. Eating foods that were popular during pioneer times.
