Walter Tull was born in 1888. He was born in England, his dad was from Barbados in the Caribbean.

Walter Tull loved football and played for Tottenham Hotspur –he was very fit and was a swift runner.

Walter Tull was the first black officer in the army.

Walter Tull was awarded 2 medals for his bravery after his death in battle in France on the 25th March 1918.

Hardit Singh Malik was a Sikh soldier from Pakistan – his nickname was ‘The Flying Sikh of Biggin Hill’.

Hardit Singh Malik was an ambulance driver in France before he became a pilot.

Hardit Singh Malik was extremely clever – he went on to work as a diplomat.

Hardit Singh Malik had a strong faith and campaigned to be able to wear his turban under his helmet.

Hardit Singh Malik had a hard working attitude and this helped him to achieve his ambition of becoming a pilot.

William Billington was an orphan and grew up without any parents to look after him.

William Billington was a very brave soldier who risked his life to help the wounded during a very terrible battle.

William Billington was awarded the Victoria Cross for “bravery and devotion to duty”.

William Billington’s battalion were one of the first to arrive to fight in France.

William Billington had only a very few personal items with him at war- a bible, a prayer book, a chess set.

Shahamad Khan was a Punjabi Muslim corporal (a high rank in the army).

Shahamad Khan was awarded a medal – the Victoria Cross – only the bravest soldiers receive this medal.
