Famous Personalities   By Abigail Stivala.

Alexander Fleming. Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin. Penicillin is found in an antibiotic.

Marie Curie. Marie Curie discovered radio-activity with her husband Pierre. She and her sister paid for the other while one of them was in university. Once while Pierre was crossing the road a carriage was coming and it passed over him. When Marie Curie knew that Pierre was dead she was sad because she couldn’t do anything without him but when her daughter Irene was 17 years old she helped her mother by being a nurse and during the 1st World war. They worked together on the x-ray machines to locate the shrapnel and bullets inside the soldiers. X-ray machines were possible thanks to the radio-activity discovered by Marie. Marie Curie died because of all her exposure to radium. Nowadays, we wear protection during x-ray treatment.

Neil Armstrong. Neil Armstrong was the first man to land on the moon in July, 1969.  On this mission, Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descended to the lunar surface and spent two and a half hours exploring, while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit in the Command Module. Neil Armstrong died in Cincinnati, Ohio on August 25, 2012, at the age of 82.

Nicolaus Copernicus. In the olden days they did not know that the sun was in the middle of our solar system not earth. Once there was a scientist called Nicholas Copernicus who theorized but could not prove definitely that the sun was at the centre of the solar system. His theory was opposed by people who believed the platonic idea of a geocentric system.

Galileo Galilei. Galileo Galilei developed the Dutch spy glass into a telescope that could help him study the planets in our solar system. He managed to prove what Copernicus could not – that our solar system is heliocentric, which means that the sun is at the centre and the planets orbit the sun which is a stationary star. Like Copernicus, he faced opposition from the Church and was put under house arrest.

Isaac Newton. When he was born his father died so his mother Hannah Ayscough married again. He was born in 4th January. When he was old and was out in his garden an apple fell and he spent lots of days thinking about it and after he discovered gravity, which is the force that pulls things to the ground.

Isaac Newton. Sir Isaac Newton was one of the greatest scientists and mathematicians that ever lived. He was born in England on December 25, 1643. He was born the same year that Galileo died. He lived for 85 years.

Isaac Newton. While at collage he became interested in math, physics and astronomy. Newton received both a bachelors and masters degree. One day when he was drinking tea in the garden , he saw an apple fall to the ground. He started thinking about why it fell, and finally concluded that the same force which caused the apple to fall also kept the moon in orbit around the Earth. This same force, gravity, also kept the planets in orbit around the Sun.

Isaac Newton. Newton`s ideas were so good that Queen Anne knighted him in 1705. His accomplishments laid the foundations for modern science and revolutionized the world. Sir Isaac Newton died in 1727.

Marco Polo. Marco Polo was born in 1254 exactly when his father Nicolo Polo was off exploring because he was an explorer. Marco Polo with his mother and father lived in Venice in Italy. When Marco Polo was 17 he travelled with his father and uncle. They met Kublai Khan. He was the ruler of China. When Marco went back to Italy, very few people actually believed his stories. With him he got back some products to Italy from China such as ice-cream, pizza and pasta. He wrote a book called ‘ The Travels of Marco Polo `. The airport of Venice is named after Marco Polo.

Christopher Columbus. Christopher Columbus was born in 1506. He lived in Genoa in Italy. During the time of Christopher Columbus people already knew that the Earth was round. When he grew up he was a map maker and had a son called Diego. In 1492 Christopher Columbus wanted to go to Asia so he could find the Indies but he knew about what had happened to Marco Polo so he went another way but he landed on Watling Island in the Caribbean in America. He called the people who lived there Indians because he thought he had landed in the Indies.

Christopher Columbus went on four expeditions to America Christopher Columbus went on four expeditions to America. His ships were Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain sponsored Christopher Columbus` trip to the New World. The New World was what they called North America and South America. Christopher Columbus died without realizing that he had found a new contintent.
